“Based on the exceptional results from our first project with Wendi and her terrific crew, we had no reservations about substantially expanding the project—engaging Wendi to create a stunning “woodland” retreat and deck in our back yard. When Wendi began the design process, the back of our property was wooded but overgrown and weedy. Between house and woods was an unwelcoming space of clay and mud from the recent construction of the house. Wendi took advantage of the natural wooded landscape by judicious pruning and strategic removal or transplant of plant material. Once the woodland “canvas” was in place, she added a dry creek bed as a landscape feature. Lined with river rock, and beautifully landscaped, it’s a standout feature of our property. It also functions highly efficiently as a drainage solution. Wendi selected plants and trees (among them Japanese maples, camellias, and dogwoods) to enhance the woodland feel and to provide color, shape, and/or bloom throughout the seasons. Strategic placement and plant selection provide screening from neighboring properties. Fruit-bearing plants attract a variety of birds. Our living room windows bring the outside in. Wendi planned for a lovely view from inside too. Because we wanted to fully enjoy the backyard oasis that Wendi created, we asked her to design a deck. Her creative solution was a wooden deck on three levels. It enhances our property and blends seamlessly into the woodland garden she created. Because of Wendi’s creative use of levels and building materials (e.g., cable railings), the deck also allows for an unobstructed view of the landscape from inside the house . . . a feature of key importance to us.
