“We chose Paul Hendershot Design for his amazing ability to truly capture the feel of the Mediterranean garden. It is very evident that he knows the gardens of France and Italy well. We travel a lot throughout the year and also have an understanding of the these gardens and craved to have the same magic on our property. It is not merely a list of plants but rather a lifestyle carried out into the garden. We also knew that we needed to greatly reduce the water consumption of our garden and a Mediterranean plant palate appealed to us more than a native or desert scape did. The project encompassed our 1.3 acres and consisted of a new garden design, a pool and lounging space, construction of stone retaining walls and stairs throughout the property as well as the removal of existing plants and replacing them with new ones. All of the stone walls and stairs as well as the pool decking were made on site from the many local rocks and boulders on the property. The result was absolutely astounding and gorgeous. They look as if they have been on the property for generations. Paul Hendershot's stone masons were here everyday chipping away patiently with those rocks and we are so appreciative for their hard work. The entire crew were always prompt, courteous, polite and hard working throughout the course of the job. They cared for our property as if it were their own which is a rarity these days. We can't not say enough words of praise for Paul and his team. Everyday I find myself looking out the various windows in my house or walking through the property feeling such wonder and love of my garden and so joyful watching it grow and mature through the seasons. Before we had a great house that was disconnected from land on which it stood. But now the two exist together in such harmony. As if each one is there to compliment the other and together feel as if they have been on the property together for generations making it a true definition of home, a wondrous place to live in and come back to each time we leave.”

Their crew is hard working, skilled, tidy, cooperative, and always polite. They joyfully took on the challenge of my very small space, an uninspired condo garden patio that had boring (and water guzzling) grass, an awkward slope and a lopsided, ailing lemon tree I insisted on keeping. To them, the slope was a design opportunity for a stairway and path undulating down to the creek, using only stone and boulder already on site, and no mortar whatsoever, completed in only one afternoon by their highly skilled crew. They gave invaluable technical advice in siting the hot tub, considering the landscape, slope and especially privacy. They had top notch sub-contractors for tile and carpentry. Inspired by my own Polynesian roots and preferences, they removed the grass, expanded the patio, and created a magnificent tropical garden, beginning with the existing palm and fern trees, adding some exotic but hardy choices, both large and small, and finally a fabulous passion flower vine. I am so pleased with my tiny “jungle,” a truly striking, inviting, intimate, organic tropical environment. It feels like an arboretum. Everyone loves it, especially me.”

“Denise Woolery is an immensely talented garden designer, who considers how the garden looks from every angle, including from a home's interior. Besides my own home, for which I won a Santa Barbara Beautiful Award, I have seen two other completed projects of hers. Ms. Woolery successfully gave me a front and back garden that achieved my goals: a flow of walking paths throughout, low water needs, ease of care, shade in summer only, lots of color year round (leaf, flower and fruit), lots of edibles, and some natives for to bring birds, bees and butterflies. She was reasonably priced and worked work smoothly with my contractor and my gardener.”
