About Us

“Dappled Earth” in intended to evoke an image of the patterns we place on the earth. Consider a dappled shade pattern that moves across the ground through the day. Never static. The pattern moves and changes; darkens and lightens. Now consider the patterns we place on the earth when we build homes, communities, and make alterations as simple as planting trees. These patterns too are not stagnant. They change and evolve with our values and our whims. As a educated and experienced landscape architects we design nurturing landscape for our families, our communities, and our planet. Move with us beyond sustainability and into landscapes that nurture life. Eileen Obermiller is a Landscape Architect with over 20 years of experience in land use planning and landscape design. Eileen is so knowledgeable in her field. Has a great finger on plants in our region and how to blend them together to create such a beautiful design of landscape architecture for your home. Her creative eye and knowledge combines to bring you the best of both worlds when it comes to plants, material and a presentation that allows your home to make such a beautiful and peaceful statement. If you are looking for a designer who listens to your needs, takes time to understand your preferences and give you the end result you dreamed of, look no further! Eileen Obermiller of Dappled Earth was fantastic to work with. She worked on our pace, our scale and understood our budget. Most importantly to me, she listened to us. She introduced ideas for achieving our vision while also abiding by city code restrictions (which she knew and/or researched in depth to ensure 100% compliance). In some cases, the codes (a 10' fence set back from the road) felt discouraging to us, to Eileen it was a fun challenge to work around...which she did! Her sense of space, green, texture and nature's own way of helping to achieve our desired effects are all assets she brings. She is well connected in the gardening/landscape community and she gave very helpful referrals and recommendations. We always felt like a priority to Eileen. She is HIGHLY recommended!

Thanks, it was so much fun designing your project. Your family is going to love the expansive running spaces, areas for playing in the dirt and building forts, and the fresh produce you'll harvest! Do call if you would like any additional help.

I would highly recommend Eileen Obermiller of Dappled Earth. Eileen is very professional with her work product - as in an easily read and referred design of the area I wanted to reclaim. She makes it fun and exciting to think of new types of plants, trees or bushes. She also accompanied my husband and myself to a landscape nursery and helped us select our shrubs. She gave us easy to understand advice as to how to plant our new bushes. The bushes are in the second year of growth and are growing nicely. We are very pleased with the outcome of our reclamation. We would be very happy to visit with anyone who has questions.

Eileen is professional in every aspect but also friendly/personable. I had her evaluate my residence a number of years ago and her advice was appreciated. She pointed out that the curly willow on my septic system must be removed because it would send roots into the system and most likely destroy it. This year, I asked Eileen to return to do a re-evaluation of my home plus my sister's and two more. The written consultation was concise but detailed enough so that I could easily understand--in my terms--what might be done to help the properties. She included descriptions of plants with which I was not familiar. That helped me to visualize. Wildland Fire info was attached. Significant for central Oregon! Eileen's fee was very reasonable the written evaluation is easy to understand. I recommend her!

My husband and I purchased a house on 1/3 acre that needed a LOT of work. We wanted to turn it into an oasis for our family that minimized the high desert dust, was water-conscious and was also dog-friendly. As avid gardeners, we planned on doing the installation ourselves but wanted to have a solid design plan to ensure we spent our money wisely, which is why we hired a landscape architect. We are delighted we chose Dappled Earth. Working with Eileen was a pleasure. She was thoughtful in the questions she asked and responsive when we called. During our consultation sessions, Eileen helped us blend our "big picture" concepts and functional needs into a great plan that was in line with city and HOA restrictions. We love her landscape plan! In addition to detailed drawings and a thorough list of plants, our landscape plans also included elevation drawings, a rainwater collection system including gallon capacity estimates for our water feature and maintenance recommendations (to name just a few things.) Though hiring a landscape architect isn't cheap, we thought it was money well spent and are thrilled with the results!

We had a great experience working with Eileen. She met with us multiple times to understand our needs regarding our landscaping. As we implemented her design she was available to talk through challenges and help us problem solve. We couldn't be more pleased! Our yard is a showstopper and we have had plenty of people stop to chat about the result of Eileen's design.

My husband and I have a large, level, and open yard and although we love it, we needed shade trees and some privacy screens. We had some ideas about what to keep and not lose, but were in a rut on exactly what to do. After contacting several central Oregon landscape architects, we chose Eileen Obermiller of Dappled Earth. Eileen came up with a plan we love. She incorporated all of our ideas on an easy to use, beautiful, multicolor plan. We take this plan with us to nursey stores as it has her plant selections clearly called out. Her selection is very thoughtful with more than one choice for the shade trees and shrubs. She not only chose the right plants for the climate and our setting, but she took into account that we have three dachshunds, so the plants are all dog friendly. We hadn’t even thought of that. We also appreciate the references to website resources for our use. She was also very helpful, answering questions after we got the plan and started working on it. We wanted to keep to a tight budget and we were extremely pleased that Eileen worked with us to achieve this. Eileen was prompt and professional but also very fun and easy to work with. We highly recommend her!

Eileen Obermiller, owner of Dappled Earth, provided landscaping plans to remodel our 20+ year old yard.. Eileen visited with us on site, listening carefully to the uses for the yard and plant species we liked. She talked to us about hardscape options (dry ponds, use of rocks, etc), removing old over grown or diseased shrubs and trees and using other plants that were available in the yard. Our goals were to have a low maintenance yard with a small lawn in the front and back yard that could be mowed in 15 minutes or less. We also wanted to use native plants and flowers, especially those that were deer and rabbit resistant, and required little water. Of course as a gardener, I also wanted a variety of color, fragrance and texture throughout the year. Our goals sound impossible, but with Eileen’s knowledge and experience they were accomplished and we love our yard. Her plans came to us in a timely manner via the internet, giving us time to review them before our second meeting. After the second meeting, we received the final plan within a few days and were ready to start the landscaping project. Eileen is personable, a good listener, and attentive to details. I highly recommend her.

My wife and I had a general vision for transforming the small, dry backyard of our new townhome into an inviting courtyard with a paver patio and forest garden. Eileen helped sharpen this vision and translate it into a satisfying reality. In an initial consultation, Eileen asked us many questions designed to clarify our general aspirations. We also competed a questionnaire aimed at revealing additional information about our preferences. Based on this information, Eileen prepared a number of design studies to help us visualize the options. We then provided additional feedback that resulted in a proposed final design that we thought captured our expectations perfectly. Eileen listened carefully, applied her keen sense of aesthetics, kept the practical challenges of gardening in central Oregon in mind, always had time for a follow-up email and delivered a quality design in a timely fashion – all at a price that was well within our budget. We couldn’t be happier with our new courtyard and Eileen’s professional, enthusiastic and exceptional support for the project.

Dappled Earth designed and oversaw the development of "Westlund Park" on our main campus. They listened to our wants and needs and delivered exactly what we envisioned. Eileen produced a plan that encompassed everything we requested; low maintenance, lots of color, trees that will create a lot of shade, and shrubs to act as barriers. We didn't have a large budget for this project and Eileen made it work. Highly recommend Dappled Earth!
