We love working with Liza at DC Freeman! We tried a few landscapers in our area but nothing was quite sticking until we found DC Freeman. Liza is responsive, gives thorough and documented estimates, bills in a timely manner, and guarantees her work. She always answers my questions and swings by to take a look if I have any concerns related to weather, etc. She has a great creative eye and did a beautiful re-landscaping of our hill — all while keeping our budget in mind. Liza and her crew worked tirelessly to get our big job done. Communication was clear, and she was responsive throughout the process. She was able to meet deadlines due to unexpected hurdles that came along the way and had a lot of thoughtful ideas on which direction the project should go. Our new house had been abandoned for 15 years before we purchased it - just piles of dirt everywhere. David helped make our house a home (and tons of compliments from our new neighbors). David designed a beautiful landscape that highlighted the architecture of the house, and complimented the curves of the sidewalk. I had no idea what to expect and I was so happy with the results. Dave and his crew are creative and practical. They gave us a beautiful front garden with plants that take turns blooming from April through October. I never could've figured that out. They turned a stacked stone border on its head and gave us bluestone edging that looks fantastic and isn't falling down anymore. The team worked efficiently and neatly and were a pleasure to have around. Dave is a scientist and an artist and we're just thrilled with the finished product.

If you are looking for someone to transform your yard and lawn into something you see in the magazines then DC Freeman is the guy for you. Since owning our home we had a longstanding problem with water run off and drainage. Dave created a novel solution for us using experts in the field, as well as good old fashioned common sense. Two years later we are water free. I still get comments from others in the neighborhood about our backyard and when I show them where the extra runoff is "draining" to, they can't believe it, since it looks like a specially designed rock bed with implanted shrubs which they assumed were only decorative. Dave is not one to pressure you into anything, nor is he only about his bottom line like many in this line of work. He works on a fair schedule, never sacrificing time for quality. He will always do it right, and if they are any issues he will fix them. It may take longer than others as he does not do "rush jobs", but it will be worth it when it is done right. He also clearly cares about his crew and takes care of them. Why do I mention this? I think its important, not only because it is humane, but, it means that it's always the same crew coming to take care of you and they do HIGH quality work because they care about it and are valued. He is a true partner in this regard and I'd happily recommend him to anyone asking.

We hired David to update the landscaping in front of our home. I was looking for a good balance of low-maintenance, northeast US native, and colorful plantings and a way to deal with some mulch erosion. David put together and executed a plan that hit on every point and offered some guidance along the way. I am still getting compliments from neighbors. My only criticism is the price creep that came with the project to get it finished. The final project ended up about 15% higher than the official estimate, but David was able to help keep that cost down by using some materials he already had at his yard, which I greatly appreciate. While the landscaping looks great and I could not be happier with it, it is the peace of mind provided by David that I most appreciate. Even after he was paid in full, David has been quick to respond to any question or concern I have. He even stopped by the house to check things out on the same day I e-mailed him… he clearly stands by his work. 10/10 I would hire again.

After going thru a 2 month horror show with the wrong landscaper, I was lucky to cut my losses and even luckier to find David Freeman. Although his plate was full, after hearing my sob story, he made time in his schedule to fit me in. Aside from aesthetics, my main needs were getting the back yard completely leveled, fully seeded, a dog area, and the drainage relocated. He knocked them all out of the park. Dave and his team were extremely professional. They came and worked like gangbusters for 4 days straight. Always on time and working all day. I was never wondering if and when they were going to show up like you do with other contracters. It was not cheap, but like most things in life, you get what you pay for. Zero aggravation and no excuses are priceless. He knew I was on a budget and did try to cut costs where he could. He expertly relocated some flowers and shrubs that made sense, which did help save some. Being the end of the season, he also utilized some left over plants/shrubs/flowers that he already had to use in my project. I said wow awesome, I'll take the orphan shrubbery. He gets rid of it and I get it at cost - win win! I went with it as I wanted to save, but honestly this was the one place where I didn't feel there was much savings. As Dave is a super straight forward and honest person, I got a super detailed and itemized bill. I pretty much paid full boat for the flowers and plants IMO. I wasn't ecstatic with that, but what can you do. In the end, Dave came in and saved the day. He knocked out my project in 4 days with a full crew. There were no excuses or delays. The whole team was super professional. His knowledge of his craft was applied to my back yard and specific needs. They were all met and executed. As I did this project last fall, I have just recently reaped the benefits of his hard work this spring/summer and having seen most of everything in full bloom. I am very happy. Look no further. This is your guy if you want great communication, excellent execution and zero agita in your landscaping needs.

David was our contractor of choice for a recent pet turf and landscaping upgrade. His design aptitude and professionalism exceeded our expectations. We found him to be so very accommodating with both our schedule and budget, and would hire him again without hesitation. He is a true design visionary!

David did just an outstanding job! He is not your regular landscaper, this guy and his team are hardcore professionals that take everything they do to the heart. My yard was basically a forest after 10+ years of neglect. After some basic cleaning, I wanted someone who would lay a professional base to grow a great lawn. David inspected the area, measured moisture, verified sunlight exposure, tree’s impact on moisture, etc. Meanwhile, I collected quotes and recommendations from other landscapers and no one came even close to the level of details he was able to convey. The choice was obvious. His team leveled the yard, partially by hand to ensure the least impact on existing vegetation. At the same time, he consulted me on what trees to trim and where to get the most out of the sun. Not only his crew was kind enough to help in cleaning tree shrubs, but they also recommended and worked in sync with irrigation installation. The end result is simply the best lawn in the neighborhood.

David and his crew were a pleasure to work with and went the extra mile to create a show-stopping landscape. David's extensive knowledge of the area's soil conditions and plants were invaluable and enlightening. He took the time to review and discuss our vision and budget. My experience working with David could not have been better. Talk about someone who has mastered their craft and takes pride in what they do. He very thoughtfully took my vision and made some unique recommendations of his own. In our case, we were transforming an urban backyard in Jersey City and wanted the perimeter to be an eclectic garden; one year post-planting everything is thriving, triple the size and has transformed the feel of the property. David Freeman is a gifted artist who puts plants together in a way that enhances their beauty and makes my heart leap every time I come home or look out the window. I hired David to remake my back yard because Imfound its chaos was depressing. I wanted a peaceful, beautiful space to look at, which wouldn't require a lot of maintenance. The garden he created exceeded my expectations. Every time I look at it, I feel joy. Also, his crew was fantastic. They did great work and were extremely nice as well. The work was completed very quickly, within the budget quoted to me.

In a nutshell, last year Dave Freeman advised us to nurture the trees and shrubs we already had in the front garden. So we took his advice, he and his crew got to work. They were very professional, knowledgeable and thorough. This year the front garden looks amazing! Revitalized! It is flourishing beautifully! It looks like a totally different garden. We called him back to give us ADVICE about the back garden. After the consultation, I went inside. 30 minutes later, as I got into my car, there was Dave weeding the front garden. He could not leave my home until he was satisfied with what he saw. He loves what he does and his artistry and passion is evident in his work!

Dave Freeman and his amazing colleagues did fabulous landscaping work for me on several occasions. They are thoroughly professional and reliable, and Dave's ideas are often positively inspiring, often pleasantly unexpected and always on the highest aesthetic level.

"I saw DC Freeman LLC doing a spectacular job at a friend's house in New Jersey. I had a quick conversation with him and really liked what I heard. So I called David to ask him if he'd come up to my area with his team to assist me in creating an area in which to relax and meditate. I wanted a Koi Pond and a waterfall alongside a nice sitting area. He came up on a Sunday to meet with me at my home. He was so generous with his time and his ideas. I knew what I wanted overall, but had no idea how to put it all together. He is so full of zeal, knowledge and ideas that we spent almost three hours going over several different plans. He asked me the right questions and was so open to listening to everything I wanted to say so he could include them into the final design. You sense you are speaking with a person who cares about your happiness and I felt he was the perfect man for the job. About a week later I received an email laying out everything we'd spoken about and a schedule and budget in which he'd be able to do it. He is quite well written, and really delineated exactly what he was going to build and sent several photos to give me a good idea of the feeling he would seek to create for me in the space. I was worried that they'd destroy my front yard while getting his tools and materials to the back. But they were so careful to lay out a path of plywood to get his materials to the work site. I could see it was important to him that I be relaxed and confident throughout the project. I was amazed to see them build me the loveliest waterfall and pond in under one week's time. He used a panel system instead of needing to bring in huge rocks with a machine. They feel and appear to be as real as any rocks I've seen in nature. I highly recommend this product line to anyone looking to build a water feature, patio, or a stone wall. It was so instructive to watch him lead his team over the life of the project. You can see the gears in his head turning as he points and gesticulates to his team. I don't think I've ever seen a contractor care so much about the things he creates. David has a way of bringing the excitement and love he has for his work, to the relationship he builds with his clients. I knew I could believe in him when I asked him a question he was unable to answer. He told me, "I don't know. But I'll find out and get back to you by tomorrow." And he did just that. They did have to interrupt the job part way through, for a few days, to keep a prior commitment, but he had warned me in advance. The guys cleaned up after themselves every day. Everyone seemed to know their job well and were all polite and friendly. (They fell in love with my dog, who fell in love with the waterfall!) My friend had mentioned he was expensive, but I found his prices to be quite reasonable given all the time he spent working on the details, answering my many emails and spending time giving me daily updates. He told me, "I want to create you a space outdoors, that you'll want to use as often as your favorite indoor spaces." That has turned out to be the truth. David made sure to walk me through everything I needed to know about keeping things up and has since been back to trim the plants and seal the stonework. We had lost one tree which he gladly replaced when he came to seal. As modern as he seems to be with the products and tools he uses in his work, he has an old fashioned honesty about him that I find refreshing. It was just a really pleasant experience, and nice to know there are still honest, creative people pursuing work they love to do. I hope to use David's team again when I re-do the front of the house."

We have worked with David Freeman for three seasons. His knowledge of all things botanical plus very considerable aesthetic talents are a good match for us, and I admit we are clients with our own ideas about landscaping and planting. David worked with us to redesign our front yard, replacing the usual grass with a very beautiful and harmonious collection of plants, both perennial and annual. He added a stone walkway to get us through our new front garden from the door to the driveway. Maintenance is a breeze - no grass to mow! In the back yard, we are enjoying a beautiful stone patio designed and installed by David and his crew. The workmanship is absolutely first-rate. The work was entirely completed in the time promised, and his cost estimates are always accurate. He has improved our back yard plantings as well. David is very good about helping us keep up with any maintenance needs such as care and feeding of plants, dealing with unwelcome insects, and so forth. He even trapped and relocated a woodchuck who was pillaging our vegetable garden. David is a good communicator, always promptly replying to phone or email messages. David is a joy to work with. He does not cut corners. His work was a large investment for us, and our enjoyment of our home is greatly enhanced by his work. Our money was unarguably well spent. We get a lot of compliments on our unique yard from passers-by which we enjoy a lot!

When searching for a Landscape Designer & Contractor to handle the outdoor spaces as we built our new house, we interviewed several companies before we got to DC Freeman LLC. He came highly recommended to us via friends as well as on our town service blog. It was important to us to find a reliable, communicative person to work with. Somebody we felt comfortable with who would take care of all our landscaping needs. With over 25 years under his belt, Dave Freeman, and his well trained, reliable crew, met and then exceeded our expectations. Of the many contractors working on building our new home, he was among the very best, particularly in terms of being reliable and communicative. Our calls or emails were always returned by end of day, many times within minutes. Although he'd designed several friends' properties, we had no idea what we were in for until we met him. Out of the gate, he has a slight verbal stutter, but this quickly became a non-issue as his friendly nature and his passion for his work took center stage. Creating outdoor spaces is obviously what Dave Freeman was meant to do, and what he loves to do. Is there a higher recommendation than that? Beyond his landscape expertise, he's a well-read and cultured person . This only enhances his skills as a designer. Dave is of the few contractors we've met who has a membership to MOMA! After all, knowing the scientific information about plants are one thing, but being able to put them together, in a balanced design, with an educated eye is another. Dave explained, in greatest detail, everything he wanted to do for us, and why we felt extremely confident in whatever direction he led us. He obviously puts more thought into his work than "the other guy", because we often received emails from him at 2.a.m. if an idea popped into his head. Instead of a piece of paper stating, "Install lawn and landscape" along with a price tag or being given a blueprint and drawing that we couldn't make heads or tails out of, Dave did his best to lay things out in terms we could easily understand, and therefore allow us to make educated decisions. Importantly, we know he kept our budget in mind along the way too. He sometimes diverted from a more expensive option if he thought it wasn't worth the extra cost. And Dave took the time to make us understand why he felt that way, too. (Note: One of our friends calls Dave, "Her Landscape Psychiatrist.") Along with his creativity comes warmth, humor, integrity. We really felt he had our financial interests at heart in every decision we made together. He endeavored to get us to our goals in an honest, caring and balanced manner. Dave has become a trusted friend, and even helped us vet some of the other work going on with our property. He cared about the entire project for us, not his portion alone. Often you'll meet a contractor who seems more of an artist than a business person or vice versa.. Working with DC Freeman and his team offers you the best of both worlds. This was no small project, but the entirety of decisions concerning the exterior of my property. If we had to do it all over again, we'd hire Dave again. Some people on the town blog described as being on the expensive side. But after seeing the amount of time he puts in to his projects, we've reached the opposite conclusion. We see him as a bargain, because nobody puts in more time and effort to ensure your satisfaction than Dave does. Honestly, we don't envision using another Landscape Designer or contractor as long as we reside in the tri-state area.

Dave is a terrific gardener and landscaper. He has taken care of our gardens for years with great success. He has a great understanding of the horticulture, and an artistic eye for design. His crew are excellent workers with a lot of their own skill - many we see year after year. We receive a lot of compliments on our gardens, and we are thankful for Dave's vision and effort.

I wasn't looking for a landscaper when Dave (also on the checkout line) offered a response to a question I asked a local plant shop; but I was impressed by his knowledge and friendliness, so asked for his business card. A year later I contacted him, and that was about 14 years ago. He has helped beautify the properties at my current home, as well as my previous one. I appreciate his creative vision, and while his knowledge is vast, he shows a keen interest in figuring out solutions to all types of challenges. Paperwork is not his forte, so if you insist on clear, typed write-ups on work being done, make sure to request that ahead of time. His crew is hardworking and reliable. He has worked on several properties in my town, and each one has a unique feel. All impressive!

David and his crew have done a wonderful job planting and maintaining my beautiful garden of flowers. They return each season to do all the necessary work to help my flowers and plants thrive. He did a great job before our very snowy last winter and what results we had this past spring. He has a great crew who enjoy there work and there fore we get great results.

Dave and his team transformed our landscaping into something truly magnificent which we get complimented on all the time. They not only created a beautiful aesthetic to our home but addressed our functional needs as well (i.e. soil washing away, inability to grow grass in certain areas, leveling parts of our yard).
