After following Jim’s design evolution for over a decade - it was finally time to call on him for our home’s design. Our project took place in September 2025. Jim’s sophisticated and unique modern/Asian-inspired design perfectly complements our 1963 mid-century home. He listened to our needs and beautifully incorporated them into the design. He visualized our space in a way that we could not. He was a hands-on and responsive general contractor - coordinating the many schedules of his high-quality subcontractors. His thoughtful use of beautiful - yet low-maintenance plants will keep these gardeners aging in place for many years. We could not be more pleased or grateful for our beautiful backyard.

Recently we completed a backyard project designed and led by Ginkgo Leaf Studio. We had found their company online and their design portfolio really excited us. We own a mid-century modern house that had overgrown original landscaping and original concrete driveway, front walkway & entrance area. We contracted with Ginkgo Leaf to do the landscaping design as well as choosing, negotiating with and overseeing the contractors for the work. The project was for replacement of the driveway, construction of the resigned front walkway and entrance area, and extensive new landscaping for the front yard and around the perimeter of the balance of house. We are very happy with the results of the project. Jim did a great job with the design and listened to our input and addressed our concerns. The contractors selected were first rate, as was Jim’s oversight of them. We look forward to spring and seeing all the new plants growing and blossoming.

Working with Jim and his team was a true pleasure from start to finish! We went to Ginkgo looking for a complete overhaul of our existing landscaping in which we liked certain things and still wanted to keep, but we also had some areas that needed some serious attention and redesign. They came in and did a complete inventory of all the existing plants, trees, and shrubs and then came up with a completely refreshed plan which was a great mix of existing and new plantings to make our property even more beautiful. When plans were delivered, we also received booklets of all the plants they intended to plant with full color photographs which made it easier to envision before the plantings began. The design was gorgeous and incorporated so much more variety than we currently had as well as adding in more native plantings that should thrive in our area. The overall design takes in colors, textures, and blooming times. Jim and Hannah were onsite to be sure the plantings were in exactly the correct locations before the final planting occurred. We also had a follow up meeting with Jim to go over proper care and maintenance of the new plantings for the future. We are very excited to see how the plants and design will mature in the next 1-2 years. I can't speak more highly of Jim and his team for their professionalism, talent and knowledge.

If there was a 10 ⭐️ option, Jim and Hannah at Ginkgo Leaf Studio would be exceeding that! From the initial phone call, to the design phase, and then execution of our landscape plan, Jim was responsive and fun to work with. We are in Michigan so our project was remote, and we communicated via phone, and zoom. We wanted a designer with a mid mod aesthetic and Jim is very experienced in this area. We had interviewed three other designers who just gave us cookie cutter plans, but Ginkgo Leaf provided us with a totally unique plan that fits perfectly with our house. My daughter said, it looks so natural and like it’s all been there all along. The sidewalk is super cool, many rectangles offset and with blue stone runnels at the joints. We even have a recessed planter recessed into the front porch, and a matching planter recessed into the lawn. Jim spoke our language, so it was a very smooth project, and since it was a pretty complicated project, that says a lot. He worked super well with our local landscape company too, and was always available via phone or Facetime when issues arose during construction. We are very pleased, and if Jim and Ginkgo Leaf Studio design your project, whatever style your landscape vision may be, you’ll be very happy!

We had a fantastic experience working with Ginkgo Leaf Studio. Our project was a reworking of outdoor space which brought special challenges in order to match the new patio to the existing contemporary design so that it did not look like an afterthought. We worked with Ginkgo Leaf Studio to design our yard on our 1950s mid-century modern home. Working with Jim and the rest of the team was awesome. We had a wonderful experience working with Ginkgo for a substantial landscaping project at our home in Milwaukee. Jim took into account the architecture of our mid-century house and came up with a thoughtful, creative plan that matched our mid-century aesthetic. He also made sure he had a solid understanding of our needs and desires for the grounds in the early planning phases. We faced a couple obstacles—including an unusually early winter, and then the COVID-19 pandemic the following season—and Ginkgo as well as their partners handled it as smoothly as possible. Would definitely recommend.

Jim listened carefully to what we wanted and delivered perfectly on target. Fantastic design. We had thought about this project for years and previously worked with another designer on innumerable design renditions. When we still weren't feeling right about the plan with that person, we spent the additional money and went with Jim. He was priced significantly higher but his mid-century style was exactly what we wanted and his portfolio impressive. He did not disappoint. After one conversation and showing him some examples we liked, he produced a such a spot-on design we did not change a thing! We hired Ginkgo Leaf Studio to design and manage the installation of a new side-yard patio, along with a plan for updating the landscaping around our 1920's home in Cedarburg. Even given the unique challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, Jim and Hannah safely met with us and took the time to listen to our ideas, and ultimately developed a creative design plan that ties in beautifully with the unique design aspects of our home. Jim and Hannah of Ginkgo Leaf Design are talented and creative. But what really impressed us was their ability to understand context and to create an achievable plan. We have an Eschweiler designed 1907 brick home on a leafy East Side street. Our yard is small -- not much for visionary landscape designers to work with. They came up with an elegant and inviting design. It fits perfectly in the context of our neighborhood. The landscape plan not only reflects the style and period of our house, it even incorporates some of its architectural detail. Jim and Hannah also understand what it takes to make a project work. We reviewed a detailed, line-itemized plan which allowed us to choose elements most important to us now. Jim put us together with a landscaping contractor who has done an excellent job of realizing Ginkgo Leaf's plans. Jim and Hannah were there every step of the way. Ginkgo Leaf's approach incorporates a fine aesthetic sensibility and practical plan of action.

We hired Ginkgo Leaf Studio to design and oversee the build of our dream backyard in Cedarburg. We are incredibly thankful we did. Jim and Hannah took the time to go through all of our ideas and must-haves (including a shed, wood-fire pizza oven, pergola, and fire pit), and ultimately came up with a creative design plan that was better than anything we had imagined. Jim, both designed and project managed the recent upgrade to the front of our home. We are very happy with the design and his professionalism through the entire process. The team at Ginkgo led the design of our landscape for our new construction home. Our home is modern and at the edge of the cliff but none of this presented a challenge for them! They listened to what we wanted and provided a plan that matched those desires. They do a good job balancing what you ask for vs. what might make more sense, but ultimately are very customer focused. We had them architect the plan and then had a local landscaper do the install. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone!

I contacted Jim at Ginkgo for a completely new backyard and front yard design at our home in Shorewood. Being the prudent consumer I am I had a few other bids including a design-build firm who could include both design and construction in one price rather than a design fee (like Ginkgo's) plus landscaping / hardscaping costs. I received a bid from the design-build firm for the back yard which included a design (which left a lot to be desired) and the price which was quite high. So I decided to go with Ginkgo for the design and then bid out the landscape / hardscape work. Jim’s design was thoughtful, gorgeous, and fit the style of our house. We couldn’t have been happier with the end result and the process overall. We opted to hire Jim as the project manager as well and he was on-site many times throughout the entire project making sure things were going to plan and even showed up with a tape measure on install day making sure the distance between plants was perfect. Not a thing was overlooked during the process. As an added bonus, not only did we get a superior design but the cost of the landscaping, design (front and back yard) and project management came in less than the design-build firm who offered a poorly planned design for only the back yard that didn't’ take many of our requests into consideration . Gingko gets an A+ from us and we highly recommend them.

Over the years we marched half a dozen or more landscape professionals through our backyard, telling them what we wanted. They would return with a drawing of what we asked for, but we were never moved to action and weren't sure why. Friends referred us to Jim Drzewiecki of Gingko Leaf Studios in Cedarburg. After consternating over his price to draw up a backyard plan we decided to move forward feeling we have already wasted as much money, maybe more, either doing things ourselves or to other landscape companies that did not fully deliver. We met with him in our overgrown, wooded backyard, described exactly what we wanted including preserving the best parts of our woodland and made it very clear we wanted a pergola off the back of the house over the twelve-foot patio doors in order to extend our living space. A couple of weeks later he returned with the plan showing the pergola off to the side (I was not happy) and explained it is best to have it there in order to allow more light into our family room, have the warmth of a fire pit be the focal point and to avoid walking out of our house and around a dining table (of potentially dirty dishes) to get to the backyard. Beyond the hardscaping, the plan called for plants that would artfully integrate into our woodland setting. Everyone else gave us what we asked for, but it never felt right! Fortunately, Jim had the confidence in his vision and talent to NOT simply mirror the design we thought we wanted. Finally, a beautiful hardscaping and landscaping plan, along with a plant portfolio that moved us to action! The plan was bid out and we selected Jay Stilb of Endless Summer Landscaping in Cedarburg. Given our confidence in Jim we hired him to manage the entire project, as we wanted to be sure his expertise was leveraged from beginning to end. The plan was not straight forward, it called for a lannon stone patio with dining and fire pit areas. A water feature, with a dry creek. Lighting and well over 100 plantings. Jay and his team were very professional and easy to work with. His attention to detail was outstanding. He specifically chose one of the signature rocks because it had a divot that collects water and installed it near a bird feeder. In the midst of chaos, heavy equipment and workers Jay carefully protected a small bush given to me in memory of my father which meant so much to me. The final step of the project was the planting. Jim and his Associate Hannah mapped out all the plants according to the plan with precision and art, checking from all angles to be sure they got it right not just to plan specifications but for our daily enjoyment; privacy, nature, art, birds, etc.! Both Jim and Jay were •great listeners and communicators •very, very attentive to all details which meant we did not have to worry or wonder •detail oriented yet willing to be flexible on the fly •artful in all aspects of execution •patient and met us where we were at, sometimes appropriately coaxing me/us along •collaborative throughout the process which lead to some enhanced design elements Together, their collaboration of art and science have transformed our backyard into what our friends have called a sanctuary.

Our adventure with Jim @ Ginkgo Leaf has been such an exciting journey. We started our design consultations in April 2015. Over the next few months we bounced ideas back and forth, finalized the requirements, budgets, graduated from conceptual sketches to hand drawn plans then finally to CAD layouts. Over the next two years for the execution we worked with Jim & Kristin on budgets, coordination/supervision of work with all the subcontractors (concrete pours, irrigation, landscape, lighting, etc.), planting layouts, last minute tweaks, and we saw the front project to completion. A prime requirement of this project was to be able to phase portions in, and Jim led us through the maze and not once did we ever have to rework an area or step on prior work. The plants have been in for one growing season now. I am continually amazed, and cannot wait to see the yard at the three year mark - when things have really filled in and matured. Some of the unique touches include a printed plant portfolio, plans worthy of framing, attention to the growing seasons so that something is always interesting, and a genuinely fun adventure with collaboration at every step of the way. After experiencing some difficulties with retaining walls and drainage, we had some specific landscaping concerns and additional longer term goals. Local help was workmanlike, but not inspired. While searching online, we were repeatedly drawn to pictures published by Jim Drzewiecki, of Ginkgo Leaf Studio. We were excited to find that he was located here in Wisconsin. From our first contact, Jim truly listened and honed in on our goals. He brings an artist’s and architect’s eye and appreciation for site, history, and style, and blends this with a masterful knowledge of plants and foliage. Even though the landscaper was phenomenal, we particularly appreciated Jim’s oversight and project supervision, which was meticulous from the initial planning stage through final completion. His supervision gave us additional confidence and allowed us to step back and enjoy the process and results. Because he was on site so often, Jim was able to make adjustments for various site changes and to fine tune the design. These details would have never occurred to us, and add another level of quality to the landscaping. Jim is remarkably detail oriented (which we appreciate), and his supervision is exceptional. He also quickly accommodated and beautifully planned what became a major expansion of the project. Jim and Kristin were a joy to work with, and we could not be more pleased. Although this was an extensive and expensive project, we feel that it was well worth it. Not only are Jim’s designs inspired, his supervision of our several year landscaping project was critical in coordinating and obtaining the final results, which we think speaks for itself.

Ginkgo Leaf Studio designed the front landscaping for our 1950's ranch home. We have some unique design requests, as part of the goal of this landscaping project was to make our front accessible for a child with disabilities, which included modifying the driveway and front walk into the house. The design captured my desires for an informal look with native plantings and the need for structure and presence in our home. We had the front planted this year and enjoyed the color combinations, year round interest, and really thoughtful addition of plants that will engage our son through texture, scent and sound. Ginkgo Leaf Studio designed an incredible landscape for me, completely transforming my yard. The result is beautiful and provides 4 seasons of interest. It also creates a habitat for birds, butterflies and wildlife by incorporating an abundance of native plants for food, nectar and shelter, and a pondless waterfall and meandering stream for water. We hired Jim to design the front and back yard of an old Tudor home we purchased that was badly in need of landscaping. The yard was basically a blank canvas and a dilapidated tennis court. What Jim came up with was inspired. His use of color and the entire concept have given us a yard with a major wow factor. The hard scape, seat walls and abundant flowers have created an informal and highly enjoyable space that is inviting and stunning. We love using all of the seating areas that have been created. Jim understood and fully implemented our vision to better integrate the tennis court with the rest of the yard and connect all of it to the 1930s Tudor home. Jim is truly an artist -- he understood what we were hoping for and delivered beyond our expectations.

We hired Jim at Ginkgo Leaf last year (2014) to design a new landscape for our front yard. All of the old, overgrown and dead trees, shrubs, and flowers had been torn out, so we were starting from scratch. We had a pretty specific list of what was important to us - low maintenance, fall color - and also listed by name some of the trees and shrubs we wanted. The plan that Jim drew up was pretty much on the money. Almost all of our requests made it into the plan in a coherent fashion. Jim also added some plants that I was unfamiliar with, and they have turned out to be a really nice part of the landscape. Our meetings to discuss and refine the plan went well, and we hired Jim to solicit bids and oversee the work. He obtained the bids, gave us the pros and cons of each, and arranged for the work to be done. The work was started last fall and finished this spring. Jim was onsite frequently while the planting was being done, and made sure that everything fit together well. Since the landscaping has been finished, we have had a constant stream of neighbors stop to tell us how much they like our new front yard! The only reason that we knocked one star off is because it seemed at times that Jim had too much on his plate. It took a long time to get things going last summer, and we were not able to finish by the time the weather turned in the fall. He can sometimes be hard to get hold of, and replies are not always prompt. Other than that, we were quite pleased with Jim's work and would not hesitate to recommend him.

Ginkgo Leaf designed and oversaw the construction of a new backyard and side plantings at my house. The design included a firepit and separate outdoor eating area with a wide array of new plantings. The plants were chosen to bloom at intervals continuously from Spring to Fall.

First, I would like to emphatically agree with all the positive comments that have previously been posted about Ginkgo Leaf Studio. Jim's particular background and experience give him an edge when considering the design of one's yard. He and Kerry (horticulturist) considered the style of my home (mid-century modern), my personal preferences as articulated during a meeting and in an extensive questionnaire (Japanese style garden, etc.), and my yard's terrain (sloping backyard). As you can see by his portfolio, Jim is able to beautifully design a wide variety of styles of backyard. Jim not only designed my landscape, but supervised my project as well. His connections and good working relationships with a number of landscapers, arborists, electricians and carpenters made my project come together seamlessly. We contracted Jim through a recommendation of an architect. We built our home 9 years ago and weren't happy with our initial landscaping. He redesigned our landscaping and we were able to phase it so that we could do our backyard the first summer, front yard second summer and then some outlyers over our 24 acres the third summer. He was able to save a considerable portion of our plantings, however reconfirgure it and add items to increase interest. Jim was a pleasure to work with, he is conscientious, meticulous, organized and very talented. I respect his work so much that he has been hired and has already made a plan for our historic church.

We contracted with Ginkgo Leaf Studio to initially provide us with a landscape redesign in conjunction with the removal and replacement of a retaining wall which was leaning almost 5 inches. We wished to add a walkway from the front of the yard to the back, add plants, landscape lighting, and to incorporate a firepit with a limestone overhang that was seen in a photograph some 6 years earlier. The project would be challenging because 1) the design had to blend seamlessly with the existing landscape and a house which is extremely unique with its large triangular windows and 2) being a lakefront property there was a restriction that no paved development closer than 75 feet from the water. We liked the design so much we made virtually no changes. We then hired Ginkgo Leaf Studio to secure competitive bids and supervise the project. We were extremely happy with how the project went and euphoric with the result. We would have no difficulty recommending Ginkgo Leaf Studio to anyone.

When I purchased my home, the previous owners had not done any landscaping whatsoever except for putting in a conventional concrete sidewalk. There weren't any trees, plants or flowers in the front or side yards. Gingko Leaf Studio listened to my ideas and, using Jim's incredible visionary and design skills, they created and installed the perfect landscaping for my home. Jim and Kerry at Ginkgo did a great job in designing our entire landscape. We didn't want the cookie-cutter project, at all. We also wanted some things that we know would be tough to incorporate--mainly, a swimming pool. Tough to build a pool into a "American Natural" landscape plan.
