We are the premier residential landscape architecture studio in Central NY focusing on bespoke residential design. We offer a full-service design consultancy, including garden design, planting design, swimming pool design, outdoor kitchens, patio's, master planning, garden styling, and construction management. We have extensive knowledge in planting design as well as horticulture and can provide our clients with a manual specifically tailored for the maintenance of their new gardens. We design the project, select all the materials & furniture, provide construction details, site lighting, and oversee the construction to maintain quality. While we do not do the installation we work with the finest contractors who can bring our designs to completion and our excellent connections whether it is sourcing the plants, the installation of the hardscape, plantings, and lighting. Our high-quality design emphasizes distinction and quality. We are known for excellence, honesty, and luxury projects. With over 40 years of professional expertise and experience, the team at A. J. Miller LA knows that each project is a unique challenge that deserves a one-of-a-kind solution. Regardless of the project, the property or the budget, each and every assignment that is taken on by the principals of A. J. EXPERIENCE Anthony Miller worked in London for some of the top landscape architectural firms. His urban designs won numerous awards and recognition. Mariane Wheatley-Miller began working at EDAW (AECOM) in their London office designing parks & tourism master plans in Spain, Saudi Arabia, Manchester, UK and in South East India. EDUCATION & TEACHING Anthony James Miller is a professor emeritus from the Department of Landscape Architecture at SUNY, Environmental, Science & Forestry specializing in site design and has a Master in Art History – focusing on ‘The history of Landscape Architecture. He was recognized for his teaching with the Foundation Award for Exceptional Achievement in Teaching by the Trustees of SUNY ESF. Internationally educated Mariane Wheatley-Miller grew up in the Cotswolds, UK, and graduated from Kingston University in London with a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Hons) in Landscape Architecture followed by a Post Graduate Diploma.

We contacted AJ Miller Landscape Architecture PLLC because we wanted a cohesive design for landscaping and hardscape for our yard. Mariane Wheatley Miller was friendly and professional. She met with us at our home multiple times both to get a sense of our style and preferences as well as to familiarize herself with the property and its needs. We were looking for a landscape architect who could suggest plantings and also incorporate a few personal favorites. We were also looking for someone who could design a patio, pergola, and sidewalk that would suit our needs. Mariane delivered on all counts and was easy to work with. She also was able to refer us to an excellent landscaping company to perform the work. We are so pleased with all the results and unreservedly recommend her services to anyone looking for design help with a yard or other outdoor space.

Mariane is helping me to transform a 1939 Central New York Limestone Cottage into a Cottage that could be in the Cotswolds. We have just finished planting a small portion of the landscape and all I can say is - Mariane you are "spot on"! Over the years, I have had a number of houses and worked with many with the landscapes. All they wanted to do was see how many plants they could "sell" me, even if they weren't capable of surviving in my climate. This is not Mariane! She has a vast knowledge about what plants will and will not be appropriate for the area, the design and where they can be obtained. She truly puts herself in the "shoes of the client". When we first met I mentioned wanting a landscape plan. She explained that would be expensive and a waste of money and that would prefer, when the plants were available, being onsite and personally placing the plants in the area. The site is a slope. Well, the plants arrived last week and Mariane, my landscapers and I placed the plants. Mariane is a "hands on person". She was right there with us grabbing plants and putting them where they belonged. Because of that she has gained the respect of me and my landscapers. Thank you so much! Over the coming years, I look forward to working with Mariane to complete my property and have no reservations giving Mariane "carte blanche" with the project, be it budget, plants, or composition.

A.J.Miller Landscape just completed a rather large job redesigning perennial beds around our home in a wooded landscape in a very professional and timely manner. Mariannes knowlwdge of plant materials and trees that would work in our setting was wonderful. She also designed some fencing and a firewood structure that is a work of art as well as ideas for the hardscape. Definitely plan on using AJ Miller again in the future.

I know little about outdoor plants or plants in general. We just moved into our new home with dated landscaping in the front. I could have hired a landscaper but probably been offered a mundane set and arrangement of plants (see photo for what I didn't want). We wanted something unique and less stilted then most of the homes in our area. I found Mariane through her webpage and was pleased by the variety of looks she is capable of creating. We met and I was impressed with her ability to read through my inepitude and design a plan that would be pleasing. Landscape Architects are professionals and are not inexpensive. She coordinated with a local Landscaper and nursery and the project evolved quickly. I am very pleased with the outcome (see photo) and would happily recommend her to anyone who wants something more for their outdoor landscape.

In looking on the internet for a landscape architect to consult with on some design ideas for my back yard, A J Miller really stood out. The gallery of their work displayed an elegance and design sense that seemed to be a cut above the rest. I made an appointment with Mariane who stopped over the following week. Mariane sized up my situation rather quickly and proposed a number of really great ideas. I was very impressed with the depth of her knowledge about every aspect of landscape architecture. What also impressed me--besides her fabulous British accent!--was her reasonableness and practicality. Mariane showed me how we could work with what was already in place, how certain ideas I had might be an overreach, and how we could bump things up a notch in ways I hadn't thought of. She also sent me a number of photos to show me what she had in mind. Mariane had a very appealing "can do"'positivity, was very friendly yet professional, and highly knowledgeable and creative. It was a true pleasure working with her. I HIGHLY recommend A J Miller Landscape Arcitecture!

Marianne is a talented and client focused landscape designer with a big dose of common sense and an amazing connection to this climate. She designed, refined, bid out, contracted and installed a challenging project on raw land on Skaneateles Lake in about nine months.....and we are weekend people, meaning she was the driving force. Marianne’s plant selection is exceptional - our welcome garden is already stunning, can’t wait to see next summer when it comes into its own! Marianne worked well with our general contractor, negotiating the details of the design around the driveway, septic field and other infrastructure. My only wish is that we had had Marianne on the design team from the beginning of the site and house design. Highly recommended.

Mariane is a pleasure to work with. She brings beautiful, creative and innovative ideas to the table at every meeting. Her concepts with plants as well as hardscaping were spot on. For our project she brought a traditional, European sensibility, which is what we were looking for and had not quite found elsewhere. She uses interesting and uncommon plant materials. We are still receiving compliments on our garden, years after the work was done.
