The generosity of your words has uplifted the entire team's spirits. You guys were absolutely wonderful to work with. We want you to know that you have sincerely helped us achieve our highest mission which is to bring joy into our clients' home - Victory! You loving your home is our win. Heartfelt gratitude that we were fortunate enough to have clients as lovely as the Shah Family.
Presenting the build cost reports is always a bit painful because quality construction is soooooo crazy expensive in the SF Bay Area. That said, when clients know upfront, it allows us to cost engineer before the project goes beyond an investment threshold.
Thank you for sharing all these little nuances with folks on Houzz. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of your words and your kindness by publicly stating your satisfaction.
Most Gratefully ~ the Team
Your acknowledgment is tremendous at this odd time in history. We aim to serve and feel unbelievably fortunate to still be able to provide the same level of exceptional care & attention we take pride in. Kindest Regards ~US ;- )
~be well
We would also say the same about your adorable family! You guys are wonderful to know and were lovely to work with. It was a privilege to create your project for you :- )

~Thanks for calling us out :- )
One way a design saves money is by allowing you to get apples to apples bids. Also, having things planned out provides clarity regarding what your yard will look like when it's done. This way you know what your hard-earned dollars are buying you. We hate hearing our clients' stories of earlier attempts to save by skipping the design process and being disappointed with how their project turned out.... that just leaves a burnt hole in your pocketbook. :- (
On the other hand, sometimes we hear that money was spent on a design but that the build cost ended up being WAY MORE than was budgeted; which poses a whole other set of issues. What do you do then? Scrap the project or break the bank?!
This is totally ringing our own bell, but not all Architecture/Design firms do the tedious process of accurately estimating construction cost during the design phase. To be on target with current market prices, there are several elements involved. Many moons ago, we were a design-build firm so we are now perfectly poised to do this step for each of our clients.
Lastly, it is important to keep in perspective that the majority of costs are in the build phase (92% to 85% of your cost to be exact!) As a rule of thumb, professional design fees run about 8%-15% the cost of construction in the Bay Area.
Thanks for setting the stage Sara, it allowed us to expound on those very important things you mentioned. We are thrilled to know that you love your yard which is THE most important thing.
Glad to hear you are enjoying your yard. :- )
~Thx for taking the time to share. We truly appreciate it.
This is precisely why we developed our unique system for creating spaces. Not many people know that we use to be a Design & Build firm (yup, tractors and all!) Years ago, we made a conscious decision to focus only on design. Since our firm does not profit from the actual construction, we have zero incentive for our clients to spend more. We are 100% your advocate. As you said Julian, our constant focus is on “making sure that the bid covered all the things [YOU] wanted built.”
This is so cool, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with the public. It means a lot to all of us. Cheers!
We take it VERY seriously. As you said, "We were given construction pricing and build cost implications so that we could iterate on the design and understand the trade offs." We are big believers that one can not design in a vacuum -- Design AND Budget go together. Of course the dream landscape has it all, but is it comfortable to invest that much money? This is the question that only our clients can answer. Our job is to make sure that the end result is beautiful!
Thank you again!
NICE :- )
Thank you Casey, for choosing us. We too are eager to see your project come to life!!
So in actuality, I must thank you for allowing us to have DREAM jobs. We feel blessed.
(thank you for your kind words Heather. It means a lot that you would share them publicly)
It makes me genuinely happy knowing you guys are getting such enjoyment with your daughter in your new pool. Cynthia told me how much you guys use it. Thanks for sharing ~ Enjoy!
It's great that you reached out to us because that is what we are here for. Keep us posted when it's done.
We are delighted to help with your outdoor kitchen & entertaining area. It will provide a great space to genuinely unwind after work. Well done you guys for going at the pace that suited you best. Cheers~
I agree, Houzz is a terrific resource for people who are new to a location & are needing to find a professional. Glad you found us!
It has been a pleasure helping you guys. Heck, we also look forward to coming over to share a glass of wine in your new beautiful entertaining area! Just sayin' ;-)
Fondly,
John & Cynthia
As you know, we are strong believers in educating our clients about construction cost DURING the design process. We think that clients should know what their design will cost to build BEFORE they interview contractors.
We would rather clients understand the cost implications (upfront) of their Dream Yard. Yup, the initial sticker shock to actually build said "Dream Yard" sometimes brings into focus what is truly important....maybe we really don't need all that stuff...
The dollar amount our clients choose to invest into their yard is up to them. Our role is to ensure that the final project be a beautiful space for enjoyment.
We are excited to see you guys grow and expand and we want to continue to be a part of what you're doing. Sincerely~ Cynthia
Glad you're happy. We drive by your place all the time. It looks great!
Yes indeed because each and every one of us has one. We found nobody likes to get all excited about a design idea only to find out it's twice as expensive as you wanted to spend...that's just a downer. It is far better to understand what your costs are DURING the design process.
Thanks for the review and the excellent point you mentioned.
Thank you for taking the time to publicly share about us. :-)
Fondly, Cynthia
It was great fun getting to know you, your husband, and all the doggies that you rescue. I will never forget how the pack greeted me at the door! We would love to see all your pooches running around on the dog agility course we created for them.
Thank you for your extremely detailed review. We really and truly appreciate your enthusiasm about our firm. We strive to deliver tremendous value to each and every client and we are thrilled that you feel you "got what you paid for".
