Our Land Organics

I am so happy with the 3 landscape projects in my back yard our land organic completed for me. They look lovely and the team communicated with me every step of the way. John was knowledgeable of the best way to deal with our water issue and we have been very pleased. We get many comments on the bed he designed. He also got me into native plants and I haven’t looked back. He transformed me from someone who liked daylilies and lirope, but who now gets excited looking for caterpillars on my Spicebush!

Our Land Organics is excellent! They are very professional, knowledgeable and easy to work with. Their work and design was beautiful and exactly what we asked for and more! Every day they would clean up their worksite and at the end of the project they meticulously made sure every last detail was perfect. John and his crew have done multiple projects for us, most recently landscape design and implementation for a newly constructed retail/office building in Oakley. The new-construction was going for LEED Silver, and needed to meet specific landscaping goals. John was able to design a landscape plan using native plants and that did not need supplemental irrigation, meeting the LEED Silver requirements, and staying on budget. He and his crew were very professional, communicative, and helpful throughout the whole process.

We decided to transform our 27 year old landscape. We chose Our Land Organics because of our trust and confidence in their vision and ability to get the job done. We really like their approach to collaborative design. My wife and I sat down and filled out the on-line survey in advance of meeting with John. She favored aesthetic, I preferred edible, we both wanted native to Ohio. John and his team got it done in time and on budget. I had just moved into a condo that had a patio area that was unusable. To me the outside patio area is an extension of my home and it needed help. I hired Our Land Organics to create a peaceful place I could enjoy. They took away the old concrete slab and created a wonderful place that I thoroughly enjoy today. They were prompt, friendly, and I would use them again.

I actually hired John twice. The first time he did a spring clean up and I wasn't here when he did the work, but it looks great! He was very responsive when I called and came right out to check out what I wanted done and was able to get us on the schedule very quickly. John was easy to work with and it seems to be a passion of his to work with natural, organic and native (our region) materials to help protect the soil, flowers, shrubs and trees. The second project was to replace some of our perennials in the front of our house. John did a great job again! He spent time finding the right perennial for the front of the house because I wanted a flowering plant, but it couldn't grow to high and had to be deer resistant and change to a beautiful color in the fall. Every time I drive home I love the new look of the front of my house.

From our very first phone call, John was incredibly professional and friendly. He was very responsive - returned my call quickly, came to our home the next day to see what was needed, emailed an estimate the day after, and completed work the day after that. Amazing! We truly felt he understood our vision, and he contributed some great ideas that we're excited to implement. He is extremely knowledgeable, and his passion for his work is inspiring. Our landscape beds were in desperate need of overall maintenance, and many of them had been overrun with nutsedge, a horribly invasive weed that spreads like wildfire. He came up with a fantastic idea to control it that involved no chemicals - smother it with landscape fabric and mulch. It's worked incredibly well, and we couldn't be more pleased. Both he and his crew of two were prompt, professional, thorough, and clearly cared very much about completing every task with the highest quality (including multiple walk-throughs to ensure they didn't miss a single weed). The final invoice was actually *less* than the estimate, as he ended up using less material than he thought he would need (I've never had this happen with any other company, and was very impressed with his integrity). We are very excited to work with John and his company to make our landscaping vision a reality in the coming year, and we know his expertise and ideas will take things to a whole new level.

To begin the process, we filled out a detailed survey about our land, our goals, and some of the types of plants and plant features we wanted. We appreciated the detailed ask ? and the fact that John welcomed the level of detail we provided. The next step was an initial visit to our property, followed by a second visit to take some measurements. Then John walked through some initial design ideas with us on the property and got more feedback from us. Then he walked us through the final design, showing us where everything would go. We got a detailed to-scale drawing of the design and a list of plants with both common and botanical names, making it easy for us to source the plants. What was great about this experience? Professional: We hired Our Land to do the design because we realized that, while we could handle most of the labor to redo our yard, knowledge about what to plant, where, and how to make it look good was far beyond us. We needed help with the design and someone with whom we could consult but were not necessarily ready to just farm out the project. We spoke to other landscapers who just did not seem interested in our business once they realized we would not be big-ticket clients. John was delighted to share his knowledge and expertise. He was also very kind and courteous in calls, emails, and visits, clearly demonstrating respect and care for us and for our property. He returned calls. He showed up when he said he was going to show up. We will hire him again. Knowledgeable: Knowledge about plants and the environment was deep, not shallow. John was very sensitive to what grows well where, and under what conditions and with other plants. Also a great sense of aesthetics. And he was able to connect us with other partners in the community who would be able to assist with other parts of the project.

Our Land Organics increased the size and usability of our yard by reclaiming the back 30% from a thicket of invasive and overgrown honeysuckle and creating instead an inviting and open woodland, with outdoor seating, native plants, and varied wildlife. They also created two sets of outdoors stairs which are handsome and very functional. John Hemmerle, the owner, is very knowledgeable, responsive, easy to work with, and has a great crew of guys working with him. I will continue to use their services as we add more native areas to our yard. I recommend highly.

From the moment I started talking to John about our proposed project I sensed his deep commitment to creating a natural, connected space. We had recently purchased a home that lacked any area for relaxing and enjoying nature. The majority of the back yard was driveway, with a few shrubs along the edges. Working with a design we provided John worked hard to help us realize our vision. He was clear in his communication and completed the work in a timely manner. Our makeover is the "Garden Nook" in the project list. As a follow-up, we were affected by the "great flood of Norwood and Hyde Park" and a good deal of our patio was washed away. John promptly came and repaired the damage, as if it hadn't happened. I highly recommended his services--you can't go wrong!
