Your landscape was sand, pots, unusable cement slab, and no where to sit and relax with a pretty view. I was able to move and transplant a 20' tall Tabebuia that was growing aslant, large 5" tall Hibiscus standard and a 8' tall Jatropha, all growing in the wrong location to better locations in your yard and they survived. I also moved a beautiful large gardenia that survived but was dealing with the stress adequately until you cut it back harshly and it died. The roots from three mature oak trees and three Norfolk Island trees were removed.
I disagree with your assessment that I did not listen to you or pay attention to you when we were together. Some of the things you wanted or would like to do were either not available, not feasible within your budget, and I tried to explain when it was possible.
As to the mulch, before and after application, we discussed that removing all of the oak trees, opening up the ground to full sun, installing right before the summer, and your budget using smaller plants that would mature to cover the ground, not using mulch would allow your backyard to become a weed haven and high maintenance and the need to use more chemicals to get rid of the weeds. You will never have to apply the mulch again as in my last visit with you in October, your flowers and shrubs are filling in nicely. This is Florida, your backyard of shade trees, palm trees, dead plants, rotting fence, and the amount of rain we had this summer, it is natural to have insects. I am sorry that you have seen some. Just a word of caution, it is not recommended to spray pesticides on a regular basis. If you use too many chemicals in your yard or on a routine basis, it will reduce your pollinators and butterflies.
Your Pinterest choices of Purple pampas grass, red, white, and blue flowers on one buddleia, hostas, Bourbon roses, Louisiana irises, mock orange, summersweet clethra, Harlequin Hydrangea, Burning Bush, Zebra mallows, are not zoned for Central Florida, not available for sale by local nurseries, or do not thrive here. I used your Pinterest choices to select the other flowers that would reflect the type of cottage garden you wanted, like the whirling butterflies (gaura), Apostle irises, Drift roses, Cat Whiskers, Almond Bush, dogwood, St. Luke's Plum tree, and a Redbud. Your many plants in pots were planted in correct site conditions. When I look at your Pinterest board which I have made public on my page, your landscape does reflect the pins you and I pinned.
There was only a few weeks where I asked for clients to come by and see the pergola and butterfly garden. You never told me no.
The photographs you chose to post did not accurately reflect the amazing landscape transformation I orchestrated. I took over 500 photographs before, during, and after installation. I have posted them on my projects page. https://www.houzz.com/projects/2840810
I have always treated you and the contractors in a professional manner and with equal respect. In our first conversation you informed me that you never had a contractor who you were pleased with and that they were all nightmares. I am disappointed that I was not able to change that trend. Based on their performance during previous projects, I trusted the contractors to complete their work in a timely and professional manner.
I wish you well.
