Hello! I am Natasha the owner of Sweet Smiling Landscapes. All my life I have had an equal attraction to art and design as well as horticulture leading me to a career in landscape design. While undergoing my course work for a BFA in sculpture at California State University Long Beach, I found constant themes in my work were the human relationship with the outdoor world. I found myself particularly interested in how humans have worked with nature to create a built world outside in the forms of farms and gardens. So, after graduation I followed my interests. I studied permaculture, and then horticulture at Santa Barbara City college (where I now teach Landscape Drafting). I am a licensed landscape contractor as well as an EPA-certified Water Wise designer, certified permaculture designer, and certified Green Gardener. Today use my skills as an artist and my knowledge of horticulture to create beautiful, functional and sustainable outdoor spaces. Sweet Smiling Landscapes create outdoor spaces that are as artful as they are ecologically sound. Sustainable landscape design is an opportunity to create gardens that are living pieces of art that serve to improve the local ecology. I am committed to designing gardens that are water-wise and fire-wise. My designs carefully consider ways to blend the wants and needs of my clients with the specifications of their property in each project I undertake. Bringing together the elements of sustainability and natural aesthetics, I design beautiful spaces to allow my clients to fully enjoy the outdoor areas of their home.

When we first met Natasha listened to what I envisioned for my yard. Quickly she and I met after we talked. Natasha showed me the design she created after our initial meeting . The design was extremely detailed, listed all plants, irrigation plans, hard scape plans, down to the measurement of the last little plant and location in yard. It was everything I wanted, that her and I had discussed and the creativity she had was very impressive. Her landscape crew was clean, extremely detailed and friendly. The crew and I talked at the end of each day on what was done and what the to be accomplished the next day in dentail. Natasha managed the process was frequently on site check the works progress, to make sure that the design was exactly as her and I had dsicussed and agreed. I could go on for quite some time on how excited I am to have worked with Natasha and how much I love my yard and what she turned it into. I would highly recommend her and get her booked as soon as possible. I have recommended here to all my friends. Not only is she creative, but she is a great person and honest.

Natasha is an incredible artist. I am beyond happy with her executed vision for my landscape. It is beautiful, funky, stylish, creative, and soothing. Working with her was fun and lovely. She is so knowledgeable about her subject matter -- it's inspiring! I loved the process of choosing which plants would go in the landscape; she made that activity fun and engaging. She is professional and kind, so communicating throughout the process was a breeze. She was very patient and understanding when I had to delay the project a few different times, too. She's a real get and I feel very lucky to have worked with her. I am lucky to be able to see her stunning work permanently, as are my neighbors! They have been effusive in their praise of her work as well. Couldn't recommend her more highly!

Our hillside home with very steep slopes presented a significant problem from a landscaping perspective. Sweet Smiling Landscapes was up for the challenge. She not only designed plantings that were low maintenance, but to achieve slope stabilization. She also created a beautiful herb and vegetable garden that is a sophisticated, lovely and useful spot on our property's only flat terrain. And she also selected and potted dozens of gorgeous Talavera pots for our patios and deck that "thrill, fill, and spill", perfectly accenting our home's modern Spanish style. Natasha was a pleasure to work with and we are very pleased with the results!

We were tried of looking at a dead lawn in our front yard, but I was not sure what to do with the space. Natasha is very knowledgable about removing lawns in a environmentally responsible way. Beyond taking out the lawn she came up with a beautiful planting plan. She filled the space with drought tolerant plants and interestting edible plants. When I hang out with my sons while they play basketball in the drive way I love watching neighbors slow down and admire my garden. Thank you Natasha!

When my husband and I had completed a renovation of the interior our 1977-built home, we turned our attention to the outside. Despair. The front and back gardens were in shambles. Most of the plants were in terrible shape - old, struggling and frankly out-dated. Thankfully we found Natasha and Sweet Smiling Landscapes. Natasha transformed our outdoor spaces. Where formerly there had been sad, exhausted plants haphazardly stuck between patches of parched earth, there are now thriving trees and plants, carefully selected by Natasha for their beauty- whether for their texture or their flowers . Not only are our gardens a pleasure to look at but they are now alive with bees, butterflies, birds and my favorites, the hummingbirds. Working with Natasha was rewarding from our first consultation through to the last planting. She listened to us, gave us choices, was always patient and congenial. And under budget!

I feel so lucky that I found Natasha of Sweet Smiling Landscaping to design my garden for me. I used to import home furnishings from Indonesia. I fell in love with the gardens in Bali. I kept some of the stone statues, lamps, and other garden accessories for myself. Whenever I returned home, and faced my pine-tree-dominated garden, I felt flat and empty. I loved the tropics where everything felt alive. I wanted that Bali feel for myself. Natasha also has a love of the tropics and has traveled extensively to tropical places, so she understood exactly what I wanted. She explained to me that some of the plants I had so loved in Bali were unable to grow in my Southern California climate, but there were many tropicals which would give the same feeling. She took great care placing each plant according to the light and other considerations. And the real kicker is that my water bill did not go up. When people come to my house now, they are so impressed. Magical is the word I most often hear. More importantly, when I stroll through the garden, I feel like I am on vacation. Perfect way to begin and end a stressful day. I highly recommend Natasha.

I hired Natasha to design my front yard. There were two considerations to deal with: low sun and drought conditions. Because of Natasha's extensive plant knowledge and her design ability, the yard is amazing! When it came time to design the back yard, I asked Natasha to help. I had removed a swimming pool, so on one hand she had a "blank canvas" ; but on the other hand, the yard was a small, track house rectangle. I wanted a low water, low maintenance space for entertaining. And make it beautiful, please. Natasha outdid herself for this project! It is simple, but spectacular. I was also on a budget which Natasha handled so well. It was such a pleasure working with someone of her caliber!

I was first drawn to Natasha from Sweet Smiling Landscapes when I saw her work on Barcelona Drive. She has this ability to artistically design landscapes that pleasently match and compliment a houses natural aesthetic, while also keeping true to its regions natural setting. She also has an absolute passion for growing what she calls food-forests and she creates them with an artists mind/eye - a great marriage for all types of properties no matter the size. Her work has water-intent and sustainability as a top priority, but does not sacrifice quality and beauty along the way. On top of that, she is a pleasure to work with and a fascinating person. You may even invite her in for tea/wine (whatever your pleasure) because, even when her projects are complete (which mine are not yet - still have some cutting-edge drip irrigation I really want to look into further), you still want her around!! I'd highly recommend her!
