The Land Mechanic

At the time we met Adam we weren’t sure that there was any hope for our yard, at least within our budget. It had been neglected by the previous owners for years. There was a great deal of rotting wood and any design element was nonexistent. We called it “the ghetto” and we spent very little time back there. When Adam saw it for the first time we threw all kinds of wild ideas at him, not having the first clue about landscape architecture. Adam listened patiently and assured us that all hope was not lost for our space. He quickly came back with a design that incorporated all of our (reasonable) ideas, but also his artistry and vision for a space that was functional and aesthetically pleasing. Over the summer he was dedicated to getting the job done and also spent time getting to know our family better. My kids, husband and I were happy to sit outside and chat with Adam while he worked to beautify our space. He was always friendly and we have enjoyed having him around. One of the best parts about working with Adam is that we could trust that he would do what he said he would do and he was honest and up front about what the cost would be. We see the value in our investment for an updated space that makes us feel proud of our home and happy to spend time outside as a family. Adam continues to show dedication and passion for his artistry by stopping by to remind us to do things like check the sprinklers and water the trees. He loves his trees and plants and is committed to seeing them, and us, succeed. His ingenuity is invaluable and we now realize the artistry that goes into landscape artistry. We could never have envisioned a space that works so well for the whole family and is relatively easy to maintain. Adam is devastatingly handsome and has, so please be warned and proceed at your own risk.

I have a little budget, a little yard, and, frankly, little ideas. Adam graciously worked (and still works) with my budget limitations and, while he can’t change the size of my yard, he’s had great impact with his big ideas! My layout is cozy and the flowers are so impressive. While I know I walk on the more wild side (barely tamed cosmos, morning glories, sunflowers and dill still abound in my yard), Adam has deftly allowed my unruliness to blend well with his fantastic flower choices. His combinations of flaming red yarrow, lime-green tiger eye sumac, and purple/peach hyssop against a lovely “bleached blond” wavy grass complement my other rebellious plants. And when he added the strategic Hawthorne tree along with Dr. Seuss-like Lion’s Ear and yellow speared mullein, it made my heart sing. The air traffic from the bees, butterflies and birds is a delight, too - I had a hummingbird visit daily all summer long! Adam knows his plants and how to match them to a space’s “personality,” and I now truly ENJOY my back yard because of him.

We wanted something unique when we decided to get rid our our lawn and re-landscape our small backyard, and The Land Mechanic was a great choice for us. Adam not only has a terrific design sensibility, but he also has a remarkable way with plants and an artist's pride in his work. He patiently consulted with us to come up with a plan that suited our vision and our budget, and the result is a wild, colorful, special space at a reasonable price.

We moved into our new home in the fall, and in the spring, the gardens erupted into a weedy, waist-high fiasco. Although we are temporarily renting the house, we want to enjoy our outdoor space and also uphold the neighborhood’s standard of quality. But given our budget and the previous neglect, we were overwhelmed and unsure of our options. We called Adam and he responded immediately. We met soon after and he explained how he would tailor an approach to rehabilitating our garden that would remove the problem plants and retain the more desirable components, while blending in new plants over the growing season. He even designed and built an automatic watering system that we could afford, and installed outdoor lighting that invites us to our patio every evening. Adam really took ownership of our place and while keeping costs down, performed a sort of miracle. Adam’s sense of timing is excellent and matched only by his conscientiousness and work ethic. He knew exactly how and when to take each step; he reminded us of an editor polishing a manuscript. As he explained to us, a gradual approach would actually create more value, which is unusual to hear from a contractor, but maybe not from a craftsman. Sure enough, we went from relief, to satisfaction, to intrigue, and finally surprise. And now we can’t wait to see our landscape in the spring. We feel lucky to have found The Land Mechanic and will enthusiastically entrust him with our present and future gardens.

We have worked with Adam with The Land Mechanic for 3 years straight now. He has helped us create our serene and beautiful dream garden. Adam created a beautiful outdoor living space for friends of ours and after seeing his artistry, we requested that he come and look at our yard. Adam was very professional and thoughtful in his design and installation of our outdoor living space. We worked closely together on both the design and implementation to ensure we had what we wanted and that the project stayed within budget. Adam transformed a run of the mill outdoor deck and backyard into a lush backyard retreat. Adam’s knowledge of different plants has ensured us different colored blooms throughout the growing season, complemented with lush greenery and a few surprise blooms along the way Adam takes great pride in his work and it shows in the finished project. When I bought my home one of the main selling points was the extremely large back yard. I wanted an outside living space for both people and my two precious dogs. After going three years without making a single move forward in creating the landscape that I really wanted, I decided to hire The Land Mechanic to help me realize my visions. Adam took a thoughtful approach and listened to what it was that I wanted to accomplish, and created a plan within my limited budget. He set initial priorities and goals, and in over just 2 1/2 years has executed a truly dynamic, thoughtful garden with many different micro-environments that encompasses everything that I hoped for. Our dogs have a great space to play, and we have multiple spots to chill, wander and enjoy some really magical environments. We have 4 season interest and the garden is in constant show, no matter what time of year. Adam is reliable and consistent and is great at working with owners who want to have an active involvement in creating their dream gardens. His knowledge and creative aesthetic with plants is remarkable. He has acted as a mentor and an inspiration and given us the confidence to further create, cultivate and manage our garden. When we purchased our home, we knew the unfinished yard (complete with 30+ degree slopes in the backyard) would be a challenge and an expense that we would have to face. The LandMechanic was the first landscape architect we contacted and it was clear from the first visit that not only was he up for the challenge, but he was excited and inspired by the space. After listening to our ideas, desires and inferring our preferences through thoughtful questions, Adam put together a plan complete with structural engineering, hardscape, plant, lighting and electrical elements. One that included all of the desires we put forth...space for the adults, kids, dog and an easy flow throughout. We quickly realized we would have to compromise between our desires, physics and the budget. Through the iterations, Adam remained patient and thorough in his explanations of trade offs we would have to make. Because of the complex nature of the build, Adam helped oversee the selection of contractors. He also worked directly with all of the contractors at play in the implementation, all the while planning his part of the implementation, the meticulous job of plant selection (incorporating an amazing four season design) and installation. He was on site helping to supervise and even lending a hand through all phases. Adam's commitment to our project hasn't wavered from our first meeting to calls we get today to discuss maintenance, new ideas and finishing out some of the remaining spaces. He has been a pleasure to get to know and has continued to impress us with his knowledge, passion and attention to detail in all that he does. We have so enjoyed the spaces he has created for us and look forward to watching the evolution of our garden.

The Land Mechanic is extremely knowledgeable about all things landscape architecture. His work is meticulous, sturdy, and durable, but also has a delicate nature to it. When Adam came to evaluate our yard, it was completely overgrown (albeit with a lot of good intention). Instead of the typical "start fresh" approach, he instead talked with my husband and I to discover what we really wanted and how we could create that by utilizing what was in existence already. His knowledge of native plants is tremendous as well as plants that will do well with different light and water needs. From separating plants to moving them into completely different configurations he has guided our yard from no true "design" to one that feels holistic and complete.
