We worked with the team on a full redesign of our front and side gardens. It entailed taking a sloping dirt lot and some stonework out and restructuring the slope into terraces. We started with an idea of a rock wall — we have three across the garden that were hand built by their mason. Additionally, Mariposa put in a rock-walled raised bed for lettuces and other vegetables. There are areas within the garden — butterfly garden, song bird sanctuary, pollinators — along with fruit trees. We weren’t expecting but are happy with the the “edible mess” of our front yard. Most of the plants can be eaten or used by us. It will need a bit of maintaining as seasonal plants like lettuces or chard go off, but we love the stone work and the overall feel of the garden. Be clear in what you want and expect (there was a point I was told “we kind of do what we want”) so if you DO or DON’T want a plant, speak up. Also, if your house is old, you may encounter problems with sewage, electrical, or water lines. Mariposa encountered all three (I think); not unusual, but you will have to update your lines as necessary to bring them to code. That’s not the gardener’s issue, it’s an old house issue that any major landscaping is likely to encounter.

Mariposa Gardening & Design did a fantastic job on my large and hilly backyard. Stayed on schedule, within the quoted budget, responsive to emails. Great communication. I was very impressed with the work ethic of the crew that did the work. I never saw anyone taking time to check their phones. They came here to work and that’s what they did. The follow-up garden care, included with the service came when they said they would, checked the plants, fertilized, moved a few that needed moving and replaced a couple that were not doing well. Very responsive to questions - and the workers are all kind and good natured people. Working with them was very pleasant. Would highly recommend them!

I've been working with the Mariposa team for nearly 10 years. They did the original design and install on my back yard native plant garden and have maintained and helped me evolve it ever since. The Mariposa team works with nature to bring beauty to your space, attract beneficial pollinators (think butterflies & hummingbirds) and songbirds, build healthy, fertile soil that will make your plants grow like crazy, and give you a serene and relaxing space where you can commune with nature (and all your friends and family of course). My own garden has become my favorite place to hang out, both to get my head right, and to commune with experience nature. There's always something happening - hummingbirds chasing each other as they squabble over the territory (and in once case building a nest and raising baby hummingbirds), butterflies of many kinds, all kinds of birds singing or feeding their chicks. Working with Mariposa was and is a collaborative process - they'll come to you with great ideas and work with you to make your garden exactly what you need. Highly recommended!

Absolutely gorgeous design that really took advantage of the natural landscape. The results are stunning - and it's not even spring yet! The team was a pleasure to work with - very capable, hard working crew. Our property is on a slope, so extremely challenging drainage; Mariposa team was really planful and conscientious of that, constantly testing water flow and drainage, and they have been terrific about follow up to tweak these issues, even well after the job was completed.

We hired Mariposa to take on landscaping for our whole property. We had purchased a house and were in the process of completely gutting and rebuilding it. We decided to do the same with all of the landscaping. We had some general preferences on plant selection but needed someone who could really come up with a creative vision for the site. Andrea's knowledge and skill were apparent the first time we reviewed the designs she came up with. The actual work included sheet mulching, all the planting, a new irrigation system for front and back, a permeable paver driveway, stone paths, a couple of stone landings, a fire pit with a beautiful stacked stone bench, and stone orb Andrea crafted from leftovers on site. The quality of work was excellent and the crew was efficient and professional. In the end we really couldn't be happier with how things turned out.

Andrea worked with my customer and their interest of having their back yard be totally natural as well as usable for their children and pets. She did a great job and her crew came in and created a beautiful natural landscape that is water conscious and very enjoyable. My garden had good bones but the plants were all wrong. I wanted a garden that looked natural but well-kept, a tough aesthetic to pull off. I wanted lots of birds and butterflies. Mariposa Gardening has taken care of my garden for a few years now. The principal, Andrea Hurd, started by editing the original sorry collection of misplaced plants, replacing the losers with absolute winners. I now have a beautiful variety of textures, colors, shapes and sizes. Something is in bloom in all seasons. We are overrun with birds and, in season, with butterflies. Her maintenance crews have done a great job of keeping her work looking good. The trees are elegantly pruned; each one displays that gold standard "looks like it grew that way" look. Any special request that I make is quickly taken care of. Sometimes I get treats, in the form of new flowers or vegetable starts (I love foraging in my own back yard). In short I am completely happy with Mariposa Gardening and Design.
