“I contacted Wilson Brothers Landscaping for help with two problems: (1) I had a bad erosion problem on the side of my house because water from the backyard would rush down the side and wash away so much soil that roots from the trees were exposed; and (2) I wanted to improve the landscaping in the front of the house to create some curb appeal while making it “senior friendly” and easier to maintain. Keith Carpenter visited my property twice to answer all of my questions and advise what could be done. I was very impressed with his knowledge and the proposal that he gave me. The erosion problem was solved by installing a drain box and 4” corrugated pipe that collects the runoff in my backyard and takes it through a dry creek bed that they installed that now connects my backyard to my front. My property front was improved by taking out all of the old, high maintenance plants and replacing them with lower maintenance and colorful new shrubs that look great with the front of my house; new sod was installed to reduce the size of the island and fill in where it had been neglected; and pine straw to finish everything off. Keith and his crew worked hard on the project for nearly a week and as I watched them picking and placing all of those heavy rocks by hand for the dry creek bed, I was grateful that Wilson Brothers had the right people on the job. “After 10 years of living in a house with an un-usable back yard due to drainage issues, we reached out to a competing landscaping company to have our back yard completely redone. Tens of thousands of dollars later, the back yard looked good, but the drainage issues were even worse than before. The landscaper tried several things, and eventually gave up, demanding several more thousands of dollars to fix the problems. Enter Navid and his team. We were trying to sell our house, and the buyers demanded we fix the drainage problems—and do so a week before the closing date. We called Navid and The Outdoor Makeover Team with just 2 weeks to spare before the deadline. Navid himself came out at 10:00pm that very night to walk the site, bounce some ideas off my wife and me, and took lots of notes and pictures. After consulting with his team of “hydro experts”, he promptly two nights later to sit at our kitchen table and walk through the design. I appreciated his approach to “doing it right so it won’t be a problem now or years from now.” The design included a series of branching French drains, shifting existing drains to the correct areas, and re-sloping much of our back yard so that it properly drained into the existing rock swale. His team showed up just two days later and got to work. Since their effort needed to be targeted to only certain areas of the yard, they were very careful to protect the other areas of the yard they needed to cross—opting for the much more labor intensive manual digging and trenching for the most part rather than going to easier (and more destructive) route of a ditch witch or skid steer. Navid was there inspecting all the work, and in several areas demanding his team go back and re-do a sewage line, shift a drain line a few inches, or re-lay sod and pine straw. When he showed up on the last day to perform his final inspection, he saw me pulling up an old drain line that had been crushed years prior and was nowhere near the area his team was working. He insisted I stop, and asked his team to come in and finish up, replacing the line and covering it again free of charge. When he underestimated the amount of sod required to replace the area of poor drainage, he threw in another half pallet—again, free of charge. In short, Outdoor Makeovers was the best landscaping firm I’ve ever worked with, and one of the best contractors I’ve ever allowed in my home. Navid was in constant communication, came to our home at all hours of the night to accommodate our busy schedules, did exactly what he said he would do, and did it in a timeframe that my wife and I feared was impossible. The result is a back yard that finally drains properly—even after the torrential downpours recently, the new homeowners say the yard is clean and dry. Too bad we’re not there to enjoy it! “My in-town neighborhood in Atlanta is situated along the upper boundary of a regional watershed. The roads follow the natural contours of the land, but many of the homes (constructed in the mid-1920s, including my Craftsman bungalow) were built at right-angles to a relatively steep hill. Like many of my neighbors, I'm faced with severe surface water runoff and a back yard that must be terraced if it's going to be at all functional. Back in the mid-1970s a previous owner had built a large raised garden running the width of the backyard about a third of the way from the rear lot line. By 2011, the wall supporting the garden was ready to collapse and the garden itself was overgrown, underused, and generally looked like crap. Simply stated, Shady Grove Landscapers designed and built a beautiful new curved retaining wall, including steps leading up to the garden situated in such a way that visitors are almost pulled into the back yard. They also did some further magic by installing a number of plants, shrubs, and even a small tree, so that my garden is now constantly changing and always a delight to look at. Best stroke of luck I'd had in years was discovering Shady Grove. There was, however, a downside to making a portion of my back yard so inviting and attractive; now the remainder of my yard simply didn't cut it anymore. So, in 2013 I replaced my ugly, dangerous, driveway and called Tina, who came out and explained how she could do her magic once again. Long story short (sort of) they regraded, replaced my annoying and invasive bermuda front and back with a wonderful variety of zoysia, installed several small eye-popping accent boulders in the front, and replaced an amateur-hour brick walk in the back with a graceful curving stone walkway. And after all that, the best part is the custom designed and built water feature they installed just off the back porch. I never imagined I'd have something like that in my yard, and now I can't imagine owning a home that doesn't have one. Best stroke of luck followed by the smartest move I'd made in years ...
