We worked with several different landscape architects and landscape firms trying to come up with a plan for an outdoor kitchen in our small Shaker Heights backyard. We could never quite figure out how to get everything we wanted until Dan took over. He completely overhauled the design and was able to create a backyard space that gave us everything we wanted and more! He was very reasonably priced and extremely efficient. Once he started the job, he was there every single day until he finished. It was a very smooth process and we have been thrilled with the results. In addition to building a beautiful patio that integrates old and new stone, a new shed for storage, and a gorgeous outdoor kitchen, Dan replanted the lawn and designed amazing beds for us that are very low maintenance and provide interesting and beautiful color all year long. We cannot say enough about how happy we were with Dan’s work.

Dan and his crew put on a stone patio and side walks. He had to get creative as he was working with existing features. He had great ideas and suggested to work with the natural water setting. You know you have a great contractor when the outcome is better than what you anticipated! The quality of is work is impeccable and his price is competitive. He is very knowledgeable and explained "stone science" to us. Dan stands out from other contractors because of his work ethic. Once he started the job, the project was fully completed very quickly. We plan to work with Dan again on a new build!

They deserve the name "organic" as they seem to understand my concern for keeping and maintaing a wildlife friendly landscape. Their work is well done and up to what I would consider the highest standards.

Dan built an unbelievably beautiful and unique patio for us. There is nothing like it around. He took time to revise our plans until it was just how we wanted it. He started construction when he said he would and worked straight until it was complete.

Dan and his crew have done two projects for us- and I can't say enough good things about his professionalism and attention to detail. We love our outdoor firepit and retaining wall, which has become our favorite hangout in our backyard. We plan to hire him in the future to begin Phase 2 of that project and have no doubt he'll do a great job. He's also my go-to guy for mulch each spring, and it's worth every penny to have him do that work. He takes the time to show us the needs of our plants and trees on our property- and I trust his knowledge. It's obvious he loves what he does, and he's REALLY good at it!

For the past two years, Organic Roots has provided lawn care services, as well as being selected to complete a major home landscaping project. The project objective was to transition overgrown landscaping of our 20 year old home to a new, updated, refreshed look. Project scope included design and helpful guidance as well as on site labor and project oversight by O.R ownership. Consultation was straightforward, candid and professional. The work was completed as scheduled, on time with “no surprises”. We are a very satisfied customer and proud of the new look of our home.

Dan Hickin is a great guy. Very friendly, explaining what's going on around the small house also did terrific job around the pole barn. Am truly satisfied with him, his crews, and the jobs they did.

Have had Dan and Organic Roots working on our projects for several years. We originally had a large outdoor travertine stone double patio with flowing waterfall and landscaping done 6 years ago. It is spectacular! The travertine patio trimmed in blue granite is striking and is a great addition to our backyard. This project involved not only setting the stonework but also leveling our yard and draining the area away from the house effectively. Since then, we have also had stonework repair and landscaping done on an annual basis from the team. They are always meticulously done with unique plantings and attention to detail; adding layering with large rocks or color design to set off the house. The work is neat and always done to my rather fussy specifications...I really enjoy knowing I can count on them to do a great job with any ideas I may have. Dan is really good about emailing and keeping in touch. We are very pleased with their work and professionalism!

Several months ago, we hired Organic Roots to rebuild and landscape our front and rear patios. This was a major project costing more that $20,000. The design and work was performed promptly, and extremely professionally. Owner, Dan Hickin is extremely available by phone, IM, e-mail and/or in person. He is friendly, and easy to talk to. He has a strong aesthetic sense. We could have done the project at lower cost, but it would not have been the same quality, and, for reasons related to proper water drainage, not long lasting. Bottom line: I highly recommend Organic Roots, and will continue to use this business for future landscaping work.

My husband and I have had a ten-year relationship with Dan Hicken and his company Organic Roots. For the first six years his team cut the grass on our two-acre lot, mulched the beds, helped out with the smaller items for which we contracted their service. It was all done promptly and professionally. Four years ago, we moved to an HOA managed community of individual homes on individual lots; ours was new construction. While the house was fine the problem of developing a patio space was daunting as there was a quick five foot drop only eight feet from the foundation. During our first winter we studied the problem and were convinced that only a deck would work and we both hate decks: we wanted an interesting patio and lots of planting around our much coveted screened-in porch. As winter ended, we called Dan because we knew that he had experience solving complicated landscape problems, that he was as artistic as he was reliable, and finally, he shared our sense in plantings. Within a month we had a marvelous design for our patio and plantings for two sides of our new home, a sound budget, and a project plan: with dates. It all came together on-time, and on-budget. Our patio extends twenty-five feet from the house. Dan built a dry wall of granite blocks which compensates for the sharp drop beyond the foundation. He laid-in a travertine tile patio of a simple and elegant design. At one end there are three granite benches laid in a semi-circle which provide a conversation area when we entertain and a point of style and uniqueness every other day of the year! Our ‘structural plantings’, now four years old, are beautifully shaped and fill the space available with grace and dignity. One single cypress planted to provide privacy for our screened-in porch accomplishes its job admirably; everyone comments on such a unique selection. Our under plantings are all doing well and have filled in their assigned spaces with perfection. We found that Dan’s knowledge about plants is unsurpassed; he loves natives and is skilled at using and planting them to great effect: in the most suitable location for the plant and the potential beauty it will bring to the area where it is planted. Dan Hicken took a daunting problem and turned it into the shining creation of our neighborhood: it is both beautiful and functional, something for which Dan strives. We are grateful for what Dan created for us.

Dan accomplished a major landscaping project last summer, planting more than 16 evergreens. He also designed and set in a stone walkway from the front to the backyard. He was thoughtful about both the design and the stone choices. He's really knowledgeable about all things plant related. Very collaborative, he communicated with us throughout the project. We hope to work with him again!

I had Dan install a koi pond in the back yard. His knowledge on koi ponds was pretty impressive. After 7 visits to a company in Cleveland that specializes in ponds, I bought all the pumps and waterfall items needed for the project. I needed a sketch for Dan so he can get a visual for the project. With some colored pencils and graph paper my idea came to light. We agreed on a price after reviewing the sketch and he said upfront that we may come in over budget but "you will see why" when he finishes. The final project did come in over budget by about 15% but it was WAY better than what I thought. I would have paid 50% more than allocated...his ability to get raw materials at low prices and not over charge customers when installed was the big factor. It was a 10 out of 10.

We have used Dan/Organic Roots for several projects over the past 5 years. Two were large stone/Patio projects that also included planting area and others were less major such as selecting and planting trees for a sight break line and maintaining the planting area. I have yet to see a more well planned and executed patio than our 2 level , circular patio area. Unfortunately , I do not have a photo on this computer but I believe Dan has a photo record.. I would highly recommend Dan's work for creativity and professionalism . It has been a pleasure working with him over the years

Dan’s work at our home surpassed all of our expectations! He installed specialty sod and a wildlife garden complete with walking path. He is affordable, ethical, professional, and does beautiful work-not to mention he is a very nice person who was a pleasure to work with. We highly recommend Organic Roots if you are looking for a detail oriented, extremely knowledgeable professional who also happens to care about the planet!
