Deschênes Lighting

Through his works, the multidisciplinary Montreal artist J.Deschênes materializes the essence of the disappearing urban North American architectural forms of the mid 20th century. He sees his artistic activity as an opportunity to re-actualize these forms and make them accessible again. The artist borrows from past architectural forms and remodels them to modify their meaning. His work is based on the balance of volumes of light and shadow. Due to his set of skills and experience in various technical fields such as cabinet-making and design, he works mostly with raw materials similar to those that are used in contemporary architecture. Be it plaster, resin or wood, the materials that compose his pieces appear sometimes to be heavy and strong and, at other times, empty and light. Working with an approach that is more formal than conceptual, the artist uses a purified aesthetic which guides the creation of each piece as well as the process of artistic creation itself.
