Stephen Moser Architect, a firm for architecture, design, and planning, practices a thoughtful architecture that is responsive to place, sensitive to how people live and work, and values craftsmanship and technological innovation. We believe that each project should be shaped by an elemental idea about its essence and purpose. That idea evolves from the intersection of place, program, material, and detail, and is always in dialogue with the client. It translates into making projects that have clarity of vision: the exterior has a sense of order and refinement, the interior conveys a sense of calm and spaciousness. Additionally, every designed object for the interior—from furniture and cabinetry to light fixture and hardware—must be a synthesis of idea, material, and utility. On an urban scale, we believe that the design framework must also be coherent and legible but, at the same time, should reflect diversity and multiple points of view if a richness of space is to be achieved. Our work begins with place. We examine the setting of a project (from wooded park to urban neighborhood) to help us uncover its character or essence. Clues might be found in the topography of a building site, the orientation of an apartment, the direction of sunlight, as well as in found-artifacts and sensory experiences. We always have in mind that architecture is a social art and, as such, must be sensitive to how people live and work. Buildings are vessels for people, their things, and activities: spaces have to be easily navigated, furniture has to fit, art has to be seen, and equipment must work. Architecture is about attention to detail, as well as about the big idea. A high level of detail requires both excellent design and craftsmanship; architect and craftsman must work together in a collaborative, supportive relationship. We also value the intelligent use of technological innovation, including sustainable design.

As a native New Yorker and lifelong resident of NYC, with a masters in Urban Planning and over 300 construction projects under my belt, I'm pretty good at identifying undervalued neighborhoods and undervalued properties within those undervalued neighborhoods. I come from a family of artists. So, I grew up in loft spaces here in NYC. Later in life I lived in more conventional apartments, both in NYC and abroad. I think these experiences instilled in me a fascination with how varied spaces can work, about how to create private, intimate spaces within lofts and about how to create a sense of openness in more traditional apartment layouts. VBDB aims to ensure that every project results in a referral, reference or recommendation. We will leave the work area clean, broom swept and vacuumed. If more extensive cleaning is necessary, let us know and we can likely line up a more comprehensive clean-up. Once we have performed a project for you, we see you as part of the VBDB family, if you should refer us future work, we’re more than happy to set you up with a referral system whereby you would be remunerated at an agreed upon percentage of the prospective project. We handle every single facet of the project, from interior design, architectural services coordination, engineering coordination, permitting and every facet of the construction process including project management. Already have plans, approved drawings, permits, floorplans etc.? We can provide quantities and costs for takeoffs / estimates / bids for your construction project. We love meeting and working with architects and designers who are outside of our current network. Need someone to put the whole thing together? Or, to coordinate all the parties already in place? No worries, we got you, for a small percentage of the overall project cost, we'll review all proposals from architects, trades etc., and help you perform quality control, review all change orders, flag and present possible credit memos etc., This service will pay for itself four-fold. Give us a ring!

We are a design-oriented, full-service architectural practice established in 2006. Our approach is thoughtful, collaborative, inquisitive and reflective of deep beliefs in what constitutes good design. We believe that design affects people's lives in ways that are deeper than aesthetics. We create environments in which life stories unfold. We believe we have a responsibility to create thoroughly good design. And we believe that every good design starts with a clear understanding of function and use, consideration of the surrounding context and and a deep appreciation of client direction. We believe in embracing complexity. Many factors affect design - the client’s needs, tastes and budget, the existing context, both historic and physical, the talents of each member of the design team, the need to be as judicious as possible with our natural resources, as well as technical considerations such as building systems and code constraints. We believe that it is the architect’s task to dig deep and extract the essence of these influences and then synthesize these factors into a functionally and aesthetically coherent work of architecture. We believe philosophically that all aspects of any project need to be synthesized by the architect into a coherent whole. Therefore we offer our clients not only our technical expertise, which includes planning, code compliance, municipal filings, coordination of building systems, observation of construction, etc, but also our design expertise, which includes developing the aesthetic and spatial and tactile qualities of the building.

This collaboration leads to clean, rich, imaginative designs that marry strikingly innovative thinking about function with a deep respect for the traditions of everyday living. A focus on the materiality, joinery and detail of design is apparent in all of RAAD’s work and is always considered within the context of the relationship between open space and cozy enclosure. Unlike most Architects today I don't have a singular style that I design in. I'm more like the Architects of the Edwardian Era who could design in different styles as the Client requested and the context compels. I enjoy the collaboration of a team approach that, while grounding the design in a cohesive aesthetic, creates something new in the melding of the different collaborator's ideas. With over 40 years of experience, I start the design process responding to the Client's program and preconceptions. Working with the Client, I create several quick sketch drawings of different forms the design can take. This way the Client can see all the options and we can establish a design direction for the project. More than documenting the design, I regard the drawing process as a tool in the design process. In collaboration with the Client, subsequent drawings, either hand or computer generated, are reviewed at every stage. As a small firm I don’t hand Clients off to Employees; all Client contact is with me thus ensuring a highly professional, personalized experience. In the U.S., my NCARB certification allows me to practice in every state. For my international work, I partner with local architects.
