Since 1986, Whitten Architects has been designing thoughtfully considered homes in New England. With a focus exclusively on residential design, we are experts in a variety of project types—from camps to cottages, new homes to historic renovations. Our work has won a number of awards over the years and has been extensively published in a variety of residential home design books and magazines. Our like-minded team of five architects and three designers collectively offer decades of hands-on residential design and construction experience, as well as a common ethos: we believe a home should reflect its occupants, and its design should develop from an appreciation for and an understanding of its site. Using an efficient combination of hand-drawing and our office’s state-of-the-art software, we help our clients envision their home even before construction begins. Note: We're finding that current home construction costs run $350-500 per square foot to achieve the results you see in our portfolio. This range is for the finished building only and is exclusive of design fees, site development, landscaping, furnishings, and soft costs (fees and permits).

Stone creates spaces that are inherently natural and sculptural, layered in texture and story. Continually inspired by the hunt for one of a kind pieces from around the globe while striving to work with local artisans. Angela Stone was born into design. As the daughter of a developer, she was curiously studying floor plans and sketching furniture layouts before elementary school. From the start, she loved the untold story of found objects. The more age, the more soulful. She found her place in design, and further developed her love of imperfect, understated beauty working alongside an antique collector and designer while completing her Bachelor of Fine Art in Design. After 13 years practicing Interior Design in Chicago, she has returned home to Maine and lives in Cumberland Foreside, with her husband and two boys.

Tyler Karu is a Portland, Maine based designer, specializing in renovations, interior reinventions, and custom buildings. Tyler works with clients to create their ideal living space through renovation, re-imagination and innovative design. In addition to design projects, we have extensive experience in residential construction. This allows us to offer unique real estate development opportunities, ranging from property remodels to new construction. As the daughter of a real estate developer and a residential designer, Tyler grew up in the family business. She could read blueprints before she hit her teens and made job sites her playground. Although she majored in literature at The George Washington University, she went on to study interior design and architecture at the New York School of Interior Design. Her years in Manhattan infused her education and process with a pace and vibrancy that her work reflects to this day. Tyler’s career began in earnest when she moved back to Maine and flipped a tiny, neglected cottage, the first of many properties she has taken from derelict to delightful. With her unerring eye for skillful, creative, and cost effective transformation, she has gained national recognition as an emerging commercial and residential design talent. Tyler has the unmatched ability to reimagine the potential in a neglected home or reveal the true personality of a space not yet quite sure of itself. She is a regular contributor at MarthStewart.com.
