My first clue to walk away from the job should have been when he waved his hand at me after our first meeting and said “We’re done” like he was dismissing me. I understand he had other contractors to talk to, but that’s no way to end a conversation with someone.
As an artist/faux finisher I know what products to use and what steps need to be done to get the best results. Every finish is unique, and no two finishes are alike. There are multiple steps, products and techniques used to create the prefect finish.
What he was asking me to do was not going to work and I tried to explain the process, but he kept telling me he didn’t want to do it that way. So, on Saturday afternoon, 2 days before the job was to start, he has his designer call me and I explained it to him and the designer agreed with me.
At 5pm that same day the client texts me and says he wants to see another sample by Monday morning before he goes to work for his approval. The last-minute change was because he decided to make the change at the last minute.
This is when I decided to walk away from the job and return his deposit. I truly don’t like to end a business relationship like this. I pride myself on the quality of my work, showing up on-time and getting my work done on schedule. Ask any of my clients and they will tell you I go above and beyond.
