I am leaving this review because I do not want other people to waste their money and, more importantly, damage their homes. Paint is a funny thing, people think it's simple and a lot of people DIY it, but at the end of the day, it's hard work to get it right and when it's done wrong it can completely cheapen the look of a house.
I hired S&D brushworks because a friend used them years ago and they did a good job. When I initially called I spoke to David and he quoted me based on the SQFT and some photos I sent over. He never visited the job site once, and neither did the other owner. His workers showed up on time, but other than that it was one issue after the other.
They were difficult. When I called to book the painters, I was very clear that we were in the middle of redoing our hardwood, but the house was empty. I left the timing up to them, they could either wait, or come in and work around the wood guys. They chose to come in while the floors were being done and that was the first mistake. My flooring guys worked with and around electricians, glass installers, gardeners, tile guys, demo guys, cabinet guys, and designers for 4 weeks. EVERYONE else got along. When the painters came in, the lead painter was rude with them, refused to cooperate as we had initially discussed and set them back half a day on the work because he insisted on painting the top floor himself, while 2 other painters did the hallway. Because I know he was the only one doing the top floor I also know he is the one the one who did not think to clean up the white paint he got on a glass door, bathroom mirror, or put the lights he popped out back into place.
They were careless. I could write a book on this, but I will highlight a specific moment where they moved something on top of the gas stove, managed to turn on the burner, light something fire and caused the smoke detectors to go off in my house. At least we know they work. Of course they never came clean about this event and the only reason I know is because the guy who was doing my tiles called me to tell me.
The actual work - HORRIBLE. Words cannot describe what happened here. I have primer on door frames, I have large patches of paint missing near my steps, I have an extremely obvious indentation above the entire baseboard where the old one was because no one bothered to sand it down and level it. Paint on glass doors, paint on new wood floors, a massive streak where a handlebar used to be and they were too lazy to fix it properly. They clearly never strained the paint or paint ANY attention to detail.
When I had the floor being put down I called David and asked him if it made sense to "fix the stairs" after the flooring was installed, which is what his painter was suggesting. It seemed weird to me that they would be working around the wood instead of being able to sand and flush out a wall with no obstacles. He said NO PROBLEM. We do this all the time. Actually, it was a problem and the entire staircase still looks like garbage.
We were not living here when the paint was being applied, so it took us a couple of weeks to get into the house and really see the issues. When I reached out to David and told him how unhappy I was, he apologized and said he would come fix everything himself and that I would be happy. While I appreciate the sentiment and communication, I am still far from happy. Three guys were in here today and while they managed to patch up some of the smaller issues, the big ones remain.
We paid $4500 for this abomination and when I asked David for a partial refund because I have to hire someone new to fix everything they messed up, I was told it wasn't happening.
You can see the photos of the work they did on my house in the photo section of their yelp page. Hopefully this review will save a few people money and a headache.
