Anjali Joshi Design LLC
Landscape Architects & Designers in Rhode Island
Average rating: 5 out of 5 starsNovember 22, 2013
“Mrs. Anjali had created a unique design for our front yard. She worked diligently with us every step of this project because we did not know what we want, what would be appropriate for our climate zone and our particular location. She was very patient, understanding and kind. We appreciated that! She explained thoroughly the ins and outs of this project. We were particularly impressed with her knowlege of plants and flowers, it was fun to work with her. Our front yard has been outgrowing and was not taken care of for years. Mrs. Anjali turned it into a beautiful shrubs and flower bed. She took out some old bushes and trees, kept our favorite Japanese maple (which one couldn't even see) and incorporated it into her design. And we loved the choice of shrubs and flowers she made! One more thing to add --- she managed to stay on budget! She is a very resourceful designer.”

“It was a pleasure to work with Charles, he was able to provide timely advice that helped us avoid costly changes to our driveway and landscape. I look forward to working with him in the future.”

“Sara Bradford created a design that perfectly complemented our 1830's farm house which was in need of curb appeal after a recent addition. She incorporated natural elements and plantings that highlighted the home's historical significance. It is easy to maintain and looks manicured but not fussy. She provided exactly what we wanted and was a pleasure to work with. We get lots of compliments year round!”

“We hired Sunflower Designs to remodel our backyard after Hurricane Irene destroyed most of it. We are so happy with the outcome we now believe the hurricane did us a favor! Brooke is professional, patient, and completely positive. She has a wealth of knowledge and creativity that gave us the yard of our dreams.”

“We hired Melissa to draw up landscaping plans for a garage re-build project. We needed plans for the hardscaping of new stairs and walkways leading from the street and garage to our house, as well as a landscaping/ planting plan. Melissa took on a difficult project, as we are on a hill with complicated grading issues. She was totally up for the task! She developed a plan, beautiful drawings, a budget outline, and contractor bid documents all within a short time frame, as we were late to realize the scope of what we needed. She met with us and explained everything. She is a true professional and a very nice person to work with. She always responded promptly to any extra requests, like dealing with the city of Boston Public Works Department about a new-curb cut application. FYI, our project took about a year to get permit approval in Boston, which is ridiculous, but unfortunately not unusual. We now expect to start the demolition this August 2017, so that's why there are no images. I will upload some once the landscaping is done. I whole-heartedly recommend M. A. Desjardins Landscape Architecture! You are definitely getting your money's worth if you hire Melissa. I am updating my review posted June 2016. The project was finally completed this spring, 2018, after many delays (not due to Melissa, as she was not contracted to do project management). An important note to add was Melissa's level-head and commitment through it all. After the concrete pourers did not follow the driveway plans and missed the stone paving details that were required through the City's Planning office, Melissa suggested we hold off on sawcutting and removing those concrete sections, which may have compromised the remainder of the concrete, until the Building Inspection came to review it. In the end, we were not required to remove the concrete, which saved us time and money by not needing to install that stone paving detail. I am also finally posting some pictures!”

“We had a wonderful experience working with Jeff Delasanta from Avalon Design Group. He incorporated our original thoughts into a cohesive new design which fit seamlessly with our house and into our wooded surroundings. The degree of detail in his design and drawing proved very helpful in our ability to envision the final look. We absolutely love the gas fire pit! It created a wonderful gathering place for friends and family. Highly recommend Avalon. We will be sure to use them for our next project.”

“Far beyond what I could imagine. After seeing a great job Tom did for some friends, I asked him to redesign my yard. I'd seen some of Tom's work but mostly projects of much grander scales than my cozy little yard. After a visit to measure the space, he took very little time to present me with a beautiful draft of what he envisioned. My response: THIS is a DRAFT? It was stunning! And while his artistry and vision were what initially impressed me, it was his descriptions and explanations of "what" and "why" everything was there that blew me away. He knew I wanted a low-maintenance yard and in my mind I expected ground cover and stones. Instead, he delivered a beautiful, year-round, useful, relaxing sanctuary that I cannot wait to have brought to life. He is truly able to see the potential in projects of any size.”

“In 2011, we worked with Searle Design Group to redesign our neglected backyard. The existing slope made the yard awkward and unusable. With careful regrading, the introduction of stone walls and a terrace, the new design gracefully developed three distinct 'outdoor rooms.' The selection and placement of shrubs, small trees and perennials transformed the large yard at once into a series of comfortable spaces. Four years later, the plantings have grown in beautifully, and we are thrilled with the way that the successive displays of color and texture shape and enhance the yard through the seasons. Searle Design Group are responsive, creative, and a pleasure to work with. They were happy to incorporate our ideas into the final scheme, and willing to work with us to meet our budget. Highly recommended!”
HALI BECKMAN, LTD.

“Hali has a rare, almost a sculptor's-eye view of scale, line, light, color and texture. She feels joy in watching her clients revel in the gorgeous spaces she creates. This happens because the final results reflect the extent to which she's listened to you and what you want, processed and augmented by her creative approach and discerning eye. By the time you're done with your project, Hali will be a trusted partner - and your friend. Frankly there are many talented landscape architects/designers in our area...but there has to be a reason Hali is routinely recruited by clients who can afford anyone (Think Fortune 500 companies, building summer homes in Jamestown and Newport). We feel fortunate that, though we are not in that league, we began working with Hali so many years ago (20, in fact), that she still answers our calls and kindly agrees to help design the next modification of this property in which she apparently feels invested! Before I describe her talent, I would say that Hali holds herself to the highest standards of integrity. She honors her word, prices fairly, and shows up on a job site when she says she will. If you've worked with other contractors, you know how exceptional and valuable this is. We built our home on 30 acres in the Rhode Island woods in 1982 and moved in when our son was 3 months old. It was 10 years later before we could really pay attention (mentally and financially) to the landscaping. Our property has rolling hills, ridges, and tall stands of pines. We are keen on using native plantings to the greatest extent possible, and not adding plantings or designs that are overly "manicured-looking", as this would not be in keeping with the aesthetic of the property or our preferences. At our request, Hali designed grading around the property, a clay tennis court, and an in-ground pool with a sunning area and a pool house. She hid the pool behind a tall row of arborvitae (so you wouldn't even know it was there when you pulled into the driveway), put the tennis court down the hill behind the house (so we could watch it from the ridge above), and worked to preserve and integrate the many tall native pines oaks around the property. I loved her concept of "rooms" outdoors, such that you walk around and are intrigued by a partial view you see around the corner, and are drawn to go explore. Later we brought Hali in to design a bluestone terrace with rock wall. a pergola attached to the house covered with vines (our go-to space outdoors when we sit outside with company), a fire pit terrace (overlooking the woods; it is a favorite spot), and have turned to her for high-level design concepts integrating a huge organic vegetable garden, fruit tree orchard, and a Moon gate. Hali's eye is unerring, and the property she has guided us to design over the years brings untold joy to us, our family and friends, and everyone who comes to visit. I am away from my desktop as I write this, on a new laptop that does not have photos loaded (unfortunately)...but will share photos ASAP. In the meantime, I hope it's pretty clear I recommend and appreciate Hali Beckman with all the confidence and appreciation in the world.”
