“Spruce did a beautiful job re-upholstering my bed and making curtains for me. They were extremely patient and helpful with my selections and both projects came out even better than I hoped.”

“We purchased a house in February 2016 that was built in 1996 and needed a lot of work. Our original plan and budget was to gut the kitchen and put in new cabinets and wait to redo the 2 bathrooms. After looking over the cabinets and realizing that all of them had pull out shelves I began to rethink the cabinets. "Fine Grit" was highly recommended by two people I came in contact with when remodeling this home. I called Katie and she called back the same day and we set up an appointment so she could see the job. Katie has a design background and is very artistic. She immediately saw the potential of our master plan. We wanted to open up the kitchen, add to the adjacent wet bar and make an island. She was able to expand on the idea of increasing the wet bar by moving leftover cabinets from the kitchen to the wet bar. Katie has excellent business sense, confidence and a great personality. When the meeting was over we had a plan, we had paint colors nailed down and a quote was quickly sent to me. I was able to do my two bathroom cabinets since I saved money by not tearing out the kitchen cabinets. She also gave advise on wall/trim paint colors and made a sample of the floor stain I wanted so I could see what it would look like with the cabinet paint color. Katie was flexible and great to work with on this project. I was comfortable with her and her employees having access to my house to complete their work. Katie set me up with Devon to do my reclaimed wood open shelves over the wet bar. Fine Grit will take care of you from start to finish with your best interest in mind. Katie waited for my floors to get finished before she came back to put on the cabinet doors because she didn't want them to get accidentally damaged. My cabinets are BEAUTIFUL! Katie does a high quality paint job and uses techniques to get the best finish possible. My cabinets are smooth and look brand new. People can't believe that these were the original cabinets. Plus, all the time and mess I saved by not ripping out the cabinets. I was able to get my remodel project done in 8 weeks as opposed to an extra 4 weeks to measure and deliver new cabinets. I would highly recommend Katie, Devon, Wes and Trinity for your remodel.”

“Northshore Finishing did a spectacular job repainting my kitchen cabinets from an oak finish to a modern white. With a change like this, you can't just hire anyone. You need a professional personnel who not only specializes in these types of finishes, but also has attention to detail, precision, care, and artistry. Jon is definitely the right person. The newly painted look absolutely amazing! The cabinets look revived and new, as if white was the original color. Highly recommend Northshore Finishing!”

“Thank you Melissa and Shannon of French-Corder Cabinet Designs. You took my old school Honey Oak cabinets and made them look very modern and up to date with a white and antique glazed finish. You did exactly what you said you would do and completed the job exactly when you said you would. I couldn't be any more pleased and I have already referred you to couple of my freinds. Best of luck and thanks again.”

Whether you found an elegant antique at a thrift store or have a family heirloom in need of sprucing up, working with a craftsman that does furniture refinishing may be the best choice for you. Older pieces can offer superior craftsmanship and time-honored style, so restoring wooden furniture can be worthwhile, especially if you’ve got a piece with a good frame. You’ll want to make sure any project honors the look of your antique and will last for years to come, so finding a skilled wood refinishing professional can be a wise investment.

When is it worth it to refinish furniture?

When you come across a piece that looks a bit weathered and rough, it can be difficult to know how much it can be fixed up. If an antique is unpainted, has a strong, solid frame and was made sometime prior to the 1950s, it’s likely of good quality and simply needs a little care. Paint jobs can hide nicks and stains, but if the piece just looks a little faded and worn, a craftsman skilled in refinishing furniture will be able to make it look brand new again. Essentially, the best candidates for antique furniture restoration are of an older construction, before manufactured materials and lesser craftsmanship filtered into the market. You should also take into account the difference in color before and after a project. A pro experienced in refinishing wood furniture will be able to explain how different woods will look. If you’re still unsure how realistic a project will be, a furniture refinishing professional can offer expert guidance.

What is the process of refinishing furniture like?

When you contact a local furniture restoration company, they’ll evaluate your piece’s condition, wood type and what look you hope to achieve. The first step in the process is stripping and sanding your piece before applying a new varnish. While this is a time-consuming and meticulous task, experienced furniture refinishers should be able to complete the job with precision and care. A pro can also work to repair small dents, cracks or stains. Finally, the contractor will apply lacquer for a durable finish, and work with you to choose a stain that will be fitting for the piece. When considering different finishes, take into account how your refinished furniture will blend with the rest of your decor, and how true you hope to stay to the original look. The price and timeline for different projects, like refinishing a table or a chair, can vary depending on the piece and how much work needs to be done. But a furniture restorer will be able to give you an estimate ahead of time.
