We were in the process of selling our home and the inspector recommended that a foundation company inspect the chimney to determine if it had shifted based on some mortar that I had used to fill in some thin cracks. The company came out, looked at the "thickness" of the mortar and determined that repairs were needed not based on anything, but the size of the mortar. The cracks are typical settlement cracks and are no larger than 1/8". They would not look at it again or do any further examination. I am now out $900 with the agreement on selling the house to the new owners. I would not recommend any company that does not do a complete examination for a high dollar item.
