“Last year, I hired CM to handle a major project at my home in Northern Virginia: demolishing my current driveway and installing a dyed cement driveway. It was a complicated job because the driveway was heavily sloped and a portion had to be leveled out, it required custom stone walls, flagstone borders & grading the front walkway. Ultimately CM was the highest bid. But as with all things in life, doing it the cheap way and the right way are rarely the same way. And all of what follows next is the embodiment of that life lesson: The initial project was done to perfection. The driveway was perfectly level and graded where it needed to be, the stone walls looked magnificent. But there was a problem. Bill explained to me right up front that his crew started the project with cement (purchased from a different company) the crew felt could be compromised. They returned it and used new cement for the rest of the project. And there was no real issue at that time. Bill assured me that he would watch over the year warrantee period & if he had to rip it out/re-do that area he would. So I took him at his word, we shook hands & settled up. Fast forward nearly a year and after a few cold days, the area of compromised cement began to bubble up and break apart in spots. I took a few pictures and emailed Bill. In short order, he was out to take a look and immediately advised he would rip the entire section out and replace it fully at his expense. A few weeks later, his crew had jackhammered out and replaced - not just the bad cement - but over half the driveway to make sure the color matched and grading was perfect. This was a big expense - especially for a family business of this size. Now, you may say: “ok so the guy did what he was required to do under the warrantee, so what?” Well, warrantees from any company, never mind this size, are generally worth the paper they are printed on unless you can enforce it. First off, this warranty work easily could have been done way cheaper, and it would have satisfied the warrantee even if it didn’t look great or last long-term. And if a company just said it was caused by something outside their control (abuse, salt, other factors) then your only recourse is leaving a bad review - and court. When you get to court - assuming you can find the company, serve it, and they show up - then you get to go through the courts and argue with a concrete expert about the quality of a concrete project. A judge who knows nothing about concrete then decides who is right - and even if you do prevail on the merits, good luck enforcing a significant judgment against most companies of this size with little cash on the books and often un/underinsured. All of this is to say, in today’s world, CM deserves major recognition for doing the right thing. If you have any kind of concrete, masonry, or stonework that you need done, I just can’t more highly recommend any company for its work quality and integrity than Bill and his family at CM.”
