I contracted HC Lane & Son build a pool with waterfall feature – on a concrete deck cantilevered off a hill. This is a complex structure and I, as the owner, decided to be the GC. The value of the HC Lane & Son’s contract was over $100K. Travis Lane assured us that he understood the complexity and would work with the others contractors to coordinate his scope of work with theirs.
Travis’s first deliverable was the shell of the pool which he personally supervised. There were issues that delayed the project by 3 months to correct. His lack of experience became obvious. He would repeatedly question why other contractors on the project did not show him respect. His lack of experience and his interactions were the obvious reasons and led to a lot of tension between him and the other contractors.
In the final stage of the project, my friend and I stepped in for 2 weeks to help Travis on his scope of work to make deadline. Travis consistently complained how he was not paid enough on what was his contractual obligation. He begged me to release the last payment even though the job was not complete because he needed funds to pay subcontractors. I reluctantly released the last payment with his assurance “I am not going to leave you hanging.” Immediately after that, the response from Travis was “I am not coming out to finish the open items.” I repeatedly requested follow up on the open items – to which he responded they would treated as “extra charges”. The contract I have with HC Lane & Son carries a 5 year warranty. I have no confidence that Travis will honor the work or obligation and with all the difficulties of working with him, he was ultimately fired from this project.
Throughout the project, communicating with Travis was very challenging and disturbing. His text messages to me and my wife were often emotionally charged and occasionally personally attacking. Simple questions such as “when will you be onsite to take care of this issue?” were often answered with rants. He constantly complained about the working conditions and threatened to report them even when the engineer on the project and a local officials marked that conditions were in compliant. He does not meet challenges well – often responding with complaints, excuses, and finger pointing.
Travis’s sense of design and craftsmanship are good. We all do wish him well and hope he develops the professional maturity needed. I would strongly caution against contracting with Travis at this point. For now, he does not have the experience to manage a project with any complexity and is emotionally unfit to run a sound business. Travis’s response to this review, as in so many things, will be a lot of excuses and finger pointing.

Travis Lane made a great first impression when we initially met. It was apparent from his preliminary questions at the first site visit, that he cared about his clients needs. We have a small, tight backyard which was always wet so we hardly used it. Our goals were to install a swimming pool, resolve drainage issues and replace lawn with plants, and hardscaping. Travis Lane brought us a preliminary design that would fit our needs and our budget. His hardscape and swimming pool design was on point for our wishes and we made minimal changes to his primary drawings. Travis’ submitted his professional plans to the county and our HOA and they were easily approved.
During the course of construction Travis Lane started on time and was always here when he said he would be here. We did hit more rock than expected during the excavation which increased costs beyond the contingency in the budget. This took us over budget but was unavoidable to get the pool we wanted. We were out of town during excavation and so didn’t have to listen to the hammers that week.
After enjoying for a year and a half now, we have so much more use of our backyard for all seasons. My husband uses the spa pretty much everyday after his daily bicycle ride after work. The pool is a great way to cool off when its really hot in the summer too. Travis made a custom stone bench with gas fireplace. The year round use for this is awesome! Travis was also able to give us a small negative edge on the pool. This is a great place to sit next to and drown the sound of the neighbors out.
The plants incorperated in the design are filling in very nicely and provide us with color throughout the growing season. Some shrubs/trees died after installation (which took place in hot weather) but they were replaced under warranty. A few of the replaced plants perished, and we are learning what thrives in different parts of the yard. We enjoy all the visiting pollinators, which we did not have before.
All in all Travis was great to work with. He and his crews work very hard and the craftmanship is amazing. After a year and a half we notice no wear in the paver patio, plaster, and masonry work.
We have had a few issues with the pentair control panel. They sent a new reciever and it solved one issue. The other issue had been a few times with the polaris running we cant operate the spa and it gets confusing. It would help if Pentair reprogrammed their unit so it automatically shuts down the polaris if the spa is switched on.
Early in the project we found times when Travis did not communicate plans well, but this improved over time. We would recommend him for a design and build project. The end results demonstrate real craftmanship and the intergrity of his work is evidence of his experience in the industry.

An absolute pleasure to work with Mr. Lane.
His company was on time everyday, cleaned up after themselves, and the communication during and after the entire project was stellar.
I highly recommend them for any project you may have.

HC Lane and Son were fantastic to work with. From their excellent knowledge of products, to the delivery of our project on-time and on-budge, we were thrilled with the work performed and are more than happy to provide a solid reference for their work. Special kudos to the ongoing commitment to our happiness with the project - as Travis Lane has routinely made himself available to advise, consult and administer treatment to key elements of our project even after project completion.

For one we stood behind our product to make sure it was done right and Do was complaining the whole time that we were "wasting his time" with our process to make the repairs Necessary with our own engineers to correct a problem which is not uncommon in the pool industry. Theres always that risk with shooting concrete with hot water on a cold day the job may not set correctly especially when the inside of the pool walls are not formed and slump has to be able to be worked. something could go wrong but the important part is we fixed it. Our company is trained and members of the association of pool and spa professionals and regularly attend classes and seminars for construction and new products. We thought Do was going to look past this because we gave him a few thousand dollars of free product for other parts of his project. This proves a handshake cannot be trusted at times and may it be a lesson learned for us too.
Do threatened to write this review if we did not repair a problem caused by himself and his other contractor. his threats came true after we refused to make repairs not caused by our negligence without some sort of reimbursement. Open items he claims were also issues we tried fixing for him because of his other hired contractors. In reality the threat of a bad review was just a bribe to get us to cover things that were not our responsibility.
Do was very difficult to communicate with and relay information to his other contractor about the steps needed to be taken for completion of his project. There was no Order of operation working with these guys. The jobsite had many OSHA violations everyday we tried solving but could not get everyone to participate. Do would also burn construction waste on the jobsite next to poorly ventilated areas. His burning of garbage which should have been recycled became a terrible place to work and he would not stop. Our rants were about not being able to breath when the heat index was 90% and we were breathing in his plastic bottles, pressure treated lumber, and plywood with glues.
All in all safety first and I will not put myself or my men in harms way for anyone's job. It seemed like this was expected from us most the time. We are sorry we couldn't work things out to avoid this situation. Do has top of the line material and craftsmanship and his pool will last him many many years to come if his engineers or other contractors work does not fail. We tried resolving all issues but were fired for not putting our men in harms way. Again safety first and we wish the best for Do and his family. Do, if you have any problems, questions, or would like to resolve this situation we will more than gladly take your phone call.
Thanks,
HC Lane and Son LLC.
