Tile & Stone
About Us
We started Gothic Tile in 1989 with a desire to coordinate tiles and wood. We specialize in sculptured relief tiles as well as all forms of ceramic field tiles. Since that time, we have branched out into custom furniture, pastel painting, and many varieties of combination work.
Our tiles, pastels and furniture are available direct from us, and many are carried by custom tile and design retail galleries and stores, including Ann Sacks Tile and many dealers across the country. This website is intended to provide you with an overview of our capabilities in terms of size, shape, color and design, and will allow you and your designer or architect to attain high quality results.

Barbara and Richard spent time to review their previous work and to thoroughly discuss our project. They offered us many options in color, size and design. The handmade tiles they provided were beautiful. They provided extra samples, allowing us to select our favorites. The work was unique and of the highest quality. They adhered to agreed upon project date and cost. We were thrilled with the work relationship and with the results.

I first saw Gothic Tiles work at Blue Rock Tile in Kennebunk ME and fell in love with the colors, glazes and quality. I wanted a custom design fireplace surround for my home by the sea. After contacting Barbara and discussing the project, she designed a surround that exceeded my expectations. Barbara is a talented, perseptive artist and designer. Thanks Barbara, I enjoy the fireplace every day!

Working with Gothic Tile was an adventure from start to finish in the best possible sense. Barbara, my design consultant AND tile maker, was sensitive to what I was looking for and expert in her knowledge of how to achieve our objectives. She and her husband worked efficiently and finished the job before the deadline, all the while working around carpenters who were also on the job in the kitchen. It was amazing. The end results delight me everyday when I walk into the most important room in my home. What a wonderful experience, when we all know how these things can go, sometimes.

I ordered the Art Deco design tiles from Gothic Tile for my kitchen backsplash. Barbara, the owner and designer was extremely helpful in helping me plan the installation. The kitchen project was so beautiful that I decided to continue the tile design into my laundry room. Barbara has been very helpful and has tried to fill my orders as soon as possible. Every person that has walked into my house has commented on the beautiful kitchen tile work! I worked with a local UPS service near Gothic Tile in Maine that delivered all my tiles to Arizona. I highly recommend Gothic Tile. Barbara's designs are breathtaking.

I have worked with Barbara Vanderbilt for several years on various projects, and she has produced superb results in both tile and paint. First, she created the backsplash for my kitchen stove in hand-molded, high relief tile depicting a Florida River bank with mature palms, oaks, and other vegetation framed by a quotation of my choice. The panel is approximately 3x5 feet and exquisitely detailed. She also provided hand made diamond shaped Black and Tan tiles for the interior of my fireplace creating an unusual and appealing effect. The slight variations in colors and sizing are charmingly natural and attest to the hand made origin of the tiles. Her next three projects for me were paintings. The first is 3x4 feet and recreates a scene from the Ravine Gardens in north central Florida, taking as its central subject an old and beautifully twisted and weathered oak tree festooned with orchids and other air plants. She then painted two lovely, elongated cypress trees for me in approximately 2x5 frames, each of which hangs over a bed in one of our bedrooms. Barbara captured the reflections on the surface of the water, yet also showed the roots of the trees beneath the water. Each of the paintings contains unusually placed aqua and rose tints, vivid colors but not unduly do, achieving a somewhat impressionistic effect yet overall a realistic depiction of her subjects. Barbara is a multi-talented individual, and also a wonderful person with whom to work. She is that rare combination, an artist through and through but also an entirely reliable, conscientious and timely contributor to a creative project. I recommend her without reservation,

Hired them to design and build several pieces of furniture, replacement railings and balusters for porch, and commissioned several paintings. Full disclosure requires that I state that I am the son of one of the proprietors (Richard Curewitz is my father), however the work was done on a payment basis, the design and implementation was timely and effective, and the final results wer, in all cases, beautiful and appropriate.

Gothic Tile created beautiful custom made tiles for my bathroom project. This particular project featured pale yellow/pink 18th century French Antique floor tiles and the hand made matte finished tiles created by Gothic Tile for our project were the only tiles I could find (and trust me a searched high and low) that would blend seemlessly with the antique materials we used in the project. Gothic Tile also fashioned some very difficult to execute curved border tiles for back splashes for the same project. They were really able to bring my vision to life. A pleasure to work with at a very fair price.

Christ Church Dark Harbor turned to Barbara Vanderbilt when its magnificent and historically important rectory needed an exact color match for specialized blue-gray bathroom tiles dating back to earlier generations. I had worked with her previously on tile projects requiring custom pieces, so I already knew she was a one-of-a-kind who was comfortable taking on challenging work. Exact color matches, of course, require a degree of trial and error since a tile's color is not known until l after the firing, and I was prepared to accept tiles that were close, but not exactly identical, to the sample. But Barbara's new tiles were perfect matches. I asked how that was possible, and she cheerfully explained that it was not that hard, it just took about 20 tries. I think this story says it all about Barbara. She is the best. And on top of all that she in gracious and fun to work with.
Respectfully submitted, Dudley H. Ladd, Islesboro, Maine.

I have worked with Gothic Tile for 20 years. They produce extremely interesting tiles as well as provide superior design help on projects which require custom work. Gothic Tile's work is reliable, outstanding and unlike any other tiles producer in America.
