The story of WWI Vet, Domenic M. Santarossa, who founded Santarossa Mosaic & Tile, is not unlike the stories of many European immigrants who came to America through Ellis Island in the early 20th century.
Santarossa had left his native Italy at the age of 13 to study the terrazzo and mosaic trade in Bremen Germany, and in 1913, he arrived in the United States at the age of 20 to build his future.
In 1920, he settled in Indianapolis and, a year later, moved his business into the building the firm still occupies on the city's east side. Joining with Louis Toffolo, his partner and lifelong friend, they incorporated in 1924.
Constance "Connie" Toffolo (Louis' nephew) and Carlo Toffolo (Louis' son) later joined the organization. Domenic's son Mario joined the business in 1948 after completing training as an architect at Notre Dame, and today, a third generation of the Santarossa family continues to work at the company, following in the tradition of excellence set forth by Domenic Santarossa over 90 years ago.

purchase tile from Indiana Design Center
I placed a small order, only 8 square feet of mosaic glass tile. The order says it is for 2"x2" tile. When I received the tile, it was 8 square feet of tile, but the squares are not 2" x 2". I understand that there is a "grout allowance" when measuring tile. But, even with the grout allowance, 2 of the tiles only comes to 3 1/2", not 4". The square foot sheet of mosaic tile contains 49 tiles (7 tiles by 7 tiles) instead of 36 (6 tiles by 6 tiles).
So far, Santarossa is not willing to make this right. I guess we'll see what they do.
My advice: beware!
Santarossa is not willing to fix the problem. No refund, no replacement with the correct size, nothing.
When I first ordered, Lonna and I spoke about how to install. She knew I wanted 4" high, and we discussed how the square foot section would be 6 tiles high and 6 tiles wide, making it easy to cut off strips of 2 tiles high. So, Lonna knew how the order was to be made, and that is how it was ordered. My order form indicated 2"x2" tiles, with a quantity of eight 1 square foot sheets.
Now Santarossa is telling me "too bad - all sales final"! It would be nice if they would offer to actually provide me with what I ordered. I had to pay 100% of this order on ordering day.
This tile is for a bathroom, where part of the tiling project had already been completed. I left room for 4" - just like I was told I would be receiving with this order. Now, the tile isn't going to fit into the space without lots of extra cutting.
Perhaps they treat their large, commercial customers better and don't worry much about the small potatoes residential customers.
The tile itself is pretty, but it is not the right size. Santarossa could easily have made this order right, but they refuse to do so.
It is only 8 sheets of mosaic tile - they could have easily replaced with what was ordered and what I was promised to receive.
