“Finecraft is an excellent home builder and home remodeling general contractor in the Washington, DC region. I have worked them them on at least 10 significant projects over as many years. What sets them apart are 4 strengths: 1. Their commitment to be faithful to the design created on paper and not deviate from it without sufficient cause. 2. Their commitment to maintain a customers trust and confidence with them during the course of the work. 3. Their technical expertise makes for an enjoyable building process. 4. Above all else, their ability to finish a project strongly and completely. Customers naturally expect this but it is not all that common in the remodeling industry. It takes a highly committed professional general contractor that is adequately compensated to achieve this.”

“We hired MW Construction Services to remodel our kitchen. Greg Marks came to our house to listen to our wish list and provide an estimate for the demolition of the existing kitchen, followed by installation of new hardwood floors, cabinets, granite countertops, appliances, electrical outlets, and lighting. Greg was quick and thorough in response to our questions about the contract proposal. We appreciated that Greg was willing to present some of our ideas as options with separate pricing. That allowed us to pick and choose ideas always knowing the price point of each option and the impact on the total cost of the contract. We also liked that MW is a construction company since we added a window as part of this project. Greg's company knew how to remove the old window and enlarge the opening with no damage to the existing aluminum siding (which would have been difficult to patch), as well as construct a new header needed prior to installing the new window. There was also quite a bit of new drywall to be installed as MW removed a built in pantry and also soffits along the ceiling. The new ceiling and walls were finished perfectly before any cabinetry etc was installed. Greg personally met with us to help with the selection of flooring, cabinetry, countertop, and backsplash tile, and recommended an appliance dealer who located and delivered our new appliances. We are very pleased with all of our selections, and were happy that all of the contacts he provided listened to us and responded with ideas that suited our tasted and coordinated with other product selections. Our kitchen is on the smaller side, but Greg was able to create a design that added a lower corner lazy Susan cabinet - giving us lots of storage space that had been unavailable in the previous kitchen. His design for the new layout kept appliances mostly in the same places, but shifting them a few inches here and there resulted in a more efficient work triangle and a LOT more counter space near each appliance for preparation. Except for electrical and plumbing, all of the work was performed by MW employees. These workers were courteous, punctual, very careful in our home. They covered entry areas with protective flooring, sealed off the kitchen area during demo and other messy parts of the remodel, cleaned up daily, worked hard, and performed with attention to detail. We are very pleased with the craftsmanship. The job supervisor generally visited more than once a day while workers were at my house, and was available by phone/email/text at all times. He provided me with the schedule for the next several days at a time so I knew when to expect workers and could plan my schedule accordingly. The project was completed in about 5 1/2 weeks, though it was estimated at 4 weeks. The job came in right on target for the contract cost. Though I am not a photographer, I'm including pictures so that you can see the scope of work and get a feel for the final look.”

“My wife and I hired Moss to put a 3 story addition on our Arlington VA home and renovate our existing space. We are very happy with how everything worked out, and found them to be very professional and trustworthy. A few things in particular stand out… First is the quality of the work. Their architect proposed what for us was a completely off the wall idea for how to configure our bedroom level and it worked out great. Their kitchen designer also came up with a great plan. We’ve been living in the new/renovated space for 8 month now and love how it looks and feels, and how it fits our lifestyle. Second is that they respected our deadlines. We lived in our home during the early and late stages of the work, but moved out for majority of the project. During this time we were paying our normal mortgage and renting a home. This can be an expensive proposition, especially if your project is delayed and you need to extend your rental agreement. I asked Moss to get us back into the house in 4 months and they had everything ready for us 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule. Finally I found them to be very fair-minded with respect to our contract. Their initial cost estimates were accurate, and the adjustments we made along the way were reasonable. Any large complex project is going to have mid-stream changes and instances where the homeowner’s assumptions don’t exactly match the contractor’s (or the contract). We were always able to work through those situations with Moss in a way that felt fair and reasonable to me. In general, I’ll simply say they did good work and I feel like they were good folks to work with.”

“I interviewed six vendors before meeting with Cory for our basement renovation. With the exception of one, the remaining vendors I spoke with did not provide a detailed cost estimate that described the Level of Effort to perform the work. Cory was very professional in helping us with the selection of stone for our fireplace. He made great recommendations that we hadn't thought of, and at all times; he demonstrated a genuine desire to make things right when issues came up. When there were unexpected challenges - and there always are - he kept us informed and addressed the issue. Hiring a basement contractor is somewhat akin to finding a mate, you're going to be working together for better or worse and thru thick & thin. One of the issues I would caution anyone of, is that some of his subcontractors were not always the most professional. There were instances where I had to notify Cory (repeatedly) of trash found in inconspicuous places throughout our basement and outside (i.e. cigarette butts, etc.). To his defense, he did take care of it promptly. Our project lasted 6 months and that was one of very few issues we experienced. Cory also brought in true artists, such as Joe Morgado and Megan Troyer that did an outstanding job with our fireplace and bar. In summary, we found a solid contracting partner in Cory to develop the basement of our dreams. I would strongly recommend Cory for future work.”

“Two Brothers Handyman and Home Improvement was a pleasure to work with. Ruben, the lead contractor walked through every stage of the project with me and made sure we were on the same page during every step. They showed up on time every morning and stayed late to get done what was planned for the day. They did professional work and stayed true to their goal of making the customer happy. I would recommend this contracting service and look forward to working with them again.”

“Two bedroom condo renovation – we were looking for a fresh contemporary/modern feel with openness, smooth lines and a less is more attitude. Photos: http://www.houzz.com/projects/1664209/condo-remodel We choose the kitchen designer first: Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath – We worked with Paul Bentham. He had great ideas and captured what we were looking for better than anyone else….he also wasn’t afraid to say he didn’t like some of our ideas and reminded me a bit of Chef Gordon Ramsay of kitchens. We also considered Reico, Stuart, Bray and Scarff, Modern Style Construction’s whole sale approach and a few others. Paul Bentham was probably the most expensive of all the people we considered, but probably the best as well. I like working with Paul B. and would consider him on any future job. Next we choose the General Contractor: Modern Style Construction – We worked with Sergei Tsoy. Sergei’s proposal was a flat labor fee for everything we wanted and then the materials were purchased by us or by him with a set markup. This was unlike anyone else we considered and gave us a sense of breathing room. We also considered Reico, Bray and Scarff, Four Brothers, Stuart, and a few others. Sergei was easy to do business with in terms of communications, change orders, fine tuning proposal to meet job site requirements, and he was very timely. Planning what you want and how things will look will take time and require countless iterations. Construction is messy and mistakes and problems will come up – what sets contractors aside is how they handle them. Closing out a project requires quality assurance measures by the contractor and owner. It’s easy to get frustrated no matter how good the contractor is. I liked working with Modern Style and would consider them again on any future project. Then we choose the countertop supplier: Stone and Tile Works – This was at the suggestion of Paul Bentham. The end product came out looking great. However, two major mistakes were made, but to their credit they worked on it and made it right until we were satisfied. I’d definitely use them again nonetheless. Then we choose Kitchen appliances: Subzero / Wolf – To be honest we wanted Meilo, but they didn’t make a side by side 36” fridge. It was debate on exactly how much to spend on the appliances, but at the end of the day it wasn’t the place to pinch pennies. Next was the bathroom hardware: Porcelanosa – We went to the one on Rockville Pike and the place is a bit of candy store for folks doing renovations. All of the sales people are very professional and helpful with ideas. The bathroom tiles ended up coming from architectural ceramics. We worked with Nkili Sudah and she was great. Had lots of ideas.”
SOMAT Remodeling Services LLC

“SOMAT Remodeling just completed a renovation of our 90 year old, 2700 square foot townhouse in DC, including repairing the roof and exterior stucco and trim, installing new gutters, repainting the entire exterior, remodeling the kitchen, including changing the floor plan, creating a half bath, moving windows and exterior doors, installing new cabinets, appliances and plumbing fixtures, remodeling three bathrooms, replacing old plumbing, repairing and refinishing the hardwood floors, and repainting the entire interior of the house. In other words, it was a pretty big job. Renzo Veliz is the owner of the company, and he is not just the sales person and general contractor. He performs those functions, but he is also on site every day pounding nails and getting his hands dirty. Dealing with him was very easy and straightforward. He was very reasonable when we wanted changes and provided simple and reasonable prices for the changes. We wanted to select and provide our appliances, plumbing and lighting fixtures, tile, cabinets, granite, etc.. He allowed us to do that through our own suppliers and his and we paid cost for everything with no additional mark up for him. He is a very honest man and did not try to take advantage of us on anything. He takes pride in his work and really worked hard to make us happy with the product. We have renovated several other houses and built a couple of houses, so this was not our first rodeo. It was a pleasure working with Renzo on our project and we are very pleased with the result. We highly recommend Renzo and SOMAT for any remodeling job.”

“After receiving several estimates to turn our attic into a master bedroom suite with a bathroom, we went with Thomas Custom Builders (TCB). They did not provide the cheapest estimate we received, but they were extremely professional, provided the most thorough information, seemed focused on doing things right, and we were really comfortable working with them and communicating with them. We are extremely happy we went with TCB. The renovation process hasn't been perfect - which is really not possible - but TCB has been excellent at finding solutions to the unforeseen things we could not anticipate. More importantly, they do things the right way and are honest about what is going on and what needs to be done. This was our first renovation, so we asked a ton of questions, but the entire TCB team always took the time to talk us through stuff and answer any questions we had. Lastly, the quality of their work is superb. We've had some neighbors over throughout the process who have gone through several renovations and they commented that they could tell TCB were true craftsmen based on the quality of their work. I would highly recommend their services and will hire them for any renovation work we do in the future.”
