I recently built a new home and a friend highly recommended Curtis and his team to built a wine cellar in my basement. He said they were the best in the business and they did not disappoint! The craftsmanship is impeccable. The wine cellar has become the centerpiece of our home. Our guests are all blown away. Both the price and the service were great. I cannot recommend J&C highly enough!

Curt and his team were the most professional contractors I’ve ever dealt with. Don’t let your imagination get boxed into only a wine cellar - Curt redid my entire basement. Cellar, TV room, everything. At one point when they were installing the cooling unit for the cellar, they realized a lot of the wood was rotted and it would be challenging to install. Instead of requesting extra money like almost everyone else would, his guy said “no worries, this is included.” Pure class through and through, and a product I’ll enjoy for a lifetime

Having never built a wine cellar from scratch before, I was somewhat apprehensive about the process initially. But Joseph and Curtis came very well recommended by friends and family, and my decision to use them was richly rewarded. From the initial design drawings, which I changed several times, through the construction, delivery and installation phases, Joe Kline and his team were excellent partners to work with! Communications were particularly important throughout the project, as the wine cellar was built in New Jersey and was being installed in another state. Joe had many conversations directly with my onsite home builder, which made the whole process go more smoothly than if I had been in the middle of these conversations. Possibly the most rewarding aspect of the project is the number of "Oohs" and "Aahs", plus the occasional "OMG", the wine cellar elicits from everyone who sees it. Thank you, Joseph and Curtis!

Curt was a total professional and helped every step of the way including several changes in configurations. He was super informative about what works well and what doesn’t based on his past experiences. The craftsmanship, quality of the build, and materials are second to none. My family and friends were all blown away by it and all say it looks like something from a high end restaurant or magazine. Every time I walk in I get happy which is priceless! It far exceeded all and any expectations I had. Thank you Curt and team for building me the wine cellar of my dreams!

There is not much I can say about the wine wall they constructed without sounding like I the review was paid for by Joseph and Curtis, but here goes. The work was not only top quality but it was designed with the user in mind. The unit is quiet and the condenser is located outside. No one else we consulted would even offer an outside condenser but for J & C it was standard procedure. No condensation on the glass either, which was another concern. And the look is just stunning. It was not inexpensive but it was completely turnkey down to the painting and plastering. No hesitation to give them a full recommendation.

Curt and his crew did a fantastic job on our Custom Wine Cellar they built for us in the basement. They are great to work with. Curt is very focused on attention to detail and was very easy to communicate with. The quality of their work is well worth paying for and they make sure to focus on what you're looking for as a customer when designing the room. I had used some of my own racks in conjunction with their custom mahogany racks so it was nice that they were flexible in the design process.

I wish I could give Joseph and Curtis MORE starts than 5 because we are thrilled with the beautiful custom bar they built in our condominium. The space was previously unused, and now it is the centerpiece of our main room. We wanted them to be mostly in charge of the design, and they did a wonderful job of maximizing the space and matching the countertops and hardware to the rest of our home. They are so creative and added beautiful tiles and lighting to the backsplash which make it look like a piece of art. We found them to be extremely professional and easy to work with. Fantastic experience. My project was for a new construction, and we wanted to take a 6' x 6' space that had been conceived as an extra pantry, and turn it into a wine cellar. Joseph and team did a great job with the design, and even after the usable space shrunk to 4' x 5' after the walls were put in, they designed a clean, modern white oak cellar with a simple tinted glass door, that fits > 300 bottles. Particularly impressed with their ability to work with our general contractor, and communicate with the HVAC sub-contractor and electrician to ensure all of the mechanicals were in the right place, installed and powered / wired properly. Highly recommended!

My husband and I had long talked about adding a wine cellar and custom bar to our home but had no idea where to start. My husband had been a fan of Joseph and Curtis on Instagram for a while so we called Curt to do an initial consultation. After lots of years enjoyng wine and using a combination of VinoTemp wine fridge and basement storage, we decided that the time had come for a more permanent (and beautiful) home for our collection. My wife and I have four children (including three teenagers) and live in a 1921 Tudor-style home, so it wasn't feasible to turn an entire room into our new wine cellar. We decided that a wall opposite the fireplace in our living room could be re-configured as a "wine wall" and provide just what we were looking for. The wall in question has a leaded glass window at the center (which looks into our sun room) and we had a pretty specific idea of what we wanted, so we knew we needed just the right partner to turn our vision into a reality. We did a BUNCH of investigation and quickly zeroed in on Joseph & Curtis Custom Wine Cellars -- they were based in our native New Jersey and their Web site had a truly fantastic portfolio of projects in all sizes, shapes, and styles. Joe ("Joseph") Kline responded to my inquiry immediately and came out for a visit. I showed him my drawing of the wine wall we had in mind, he responded with a bunch of excellent ideas and suggestions, and the process was underway! As you might expect, there are a LOT of completely custom details to figure out for a project like this, and Joe (and the whole J&C team) could not have been more responsive, meticulous, and accommodating every step of the way. Even though our project was almost certainly on the smaller side of what J&C build, it was a very big deal for US. And to their credit J&C treated our project as a very big deal throughout the design, build, and installation phases. This is pretty specialized work, and J&C's expertise and vast experience with completed projects shows every step of the way. Communication was excellent and nearly immediate in all cases, and we ended up with a wine wall even more beautiful than we had envisioned. Our home has a gorgeous new "feature" that makes me smile each time I see it. We could not recommend J&C more highly!

Joseph & Curtis Custom Wine Cellars built a wonderful 1250 bottle wine cellar in my new home. From the initial design consultation to the final build it was perfect. The highest level of workmanship is evident throughout the project. I was so happy with the result that I had them build me a whiskey bar which also came out perfectly. You should not think about using anyone else for wine cellars or bars, their design sense, quality of materials and workmanship and overall finish is first rate. You can not go wrong!!

A perfect job completed by a great Company. The finished product exceeded all expectations. The craftsmen who came for each aspect of the project (carpentry, insulation, tiling, electrical work, glass door, cooling system and final implementation) were all great. I particularly want to callout Juan & David. We chose a 1250 capacity Wine Cellar, in white oak, installed in our basement. It starts with a consultation (Curt came) to identify the location and the customer's requirements. This is followed by a rough draft, and after a couple of iterations comes the final design. The space was prepared and then insulated, lined and tiled. The wine racks are then delivered and installed. In parallel, the cooling system was completed, and finally the glass door. I would recommend Joseph and Curtis for any wine cellar project, big or small.

Joseph and Curtis did a beautiful custom modern black wine room for our home. As a company they are professional, responsive and very easy to work with. The wine room is a major focal point on the first floor of our home and not only is it practical for our use, but also serves as an incredible wow factor for our guests. I highly recommend them!

Joe and his team were great to work with. We combined 2 closets to create a walk-in cellar (~1k bottles). The primary goals were functionality and capacity. Working with the J&C team and the CAD design process helped us figure out and settle on a design before any demo & construction began. This also helped us address some tricky aspects of the job- covering radon pipes -in an aesthetically pleasing way while still maximizing space. Joe never forced his design aesthetic on me and we worked great together to iterate through ideas and test out different configurations to get something that maximized capacity, was amazingly functional and incredibly beautiful. He even took one of the closet doors and inlaid glass in it so that the door exactly matched the rest of the room. Joe was incredibly responsive. The team was exceptionally professional and when there were some minor issues, they always were incredibly responsive with a positive attitude and the goal of making things right. On a weekend Joe even showed up to fix an insulation issue that none of us had anticipated and his wife kindly waited. I can't recommend Joseph & Curtis enough. They are great partners and as in any partnership small things arise so definitely do your part of checking all designs thoroughly. Joe cares A LOT about quality and he does what he says. The ability to trust that things would get done to a high standard made the entire process enjoyable instead of stressful. I was never surprised and there was never any equivocation about anything. Joseph and Curtis Custom Wine Cellars came highly recommended from friends and our favorite local wine store. Within just a few days of meeting Curt and showing him our space we had a full set of drawings that more than met our needs. We had just a minor revision which was quickly accommodated and the work began in their shop. When the final product was installed the majority of the work had already been done in their workshop so it was quick, relatively quiet and clean! We had a wine cellar installed from Joseph and Curtis in our new house one year ago. They installed a wine cellar on our prior house a few years ago. Both of the wine cellars have space for 800 - 1000 bottles, very quiet, fully insulated, perfect temperature, great door, excellent lighting, wonderful walls with glass and wood and perfect design. Work was done on time. Joseph and Curtis and very nice owners of their company. I would only use Joseph and Curtis if I need another wine cellar.

We have a Manhattan apartment and wanted 600+ capacity custom wine cabinet in our living room that was decorative and functional and the design they provided was spot on. Joseph and Curtis came highly recommended from two different sources but I still did my homework to make sure the pricing was in-line with some other high end competitors which it was. I've done a few renovation projects and I've found successful projects are done by vendors who do what they promise and stand behind their work. I highly recommend Joseph and Curtis.

We initially consulted with J & C to create a refrigerated wine room. Unfortunately, despite offering us several alternatives for ventilating the room, the board would not allow us to move forward. I began consulting with Curt Dahl of Joseph & Curtis on this job just about a year ago when I was in the planning stages of my new home. Curt was extremely friendly and walked me through every option and configuration that was available to me. I decided on a transitional concept with a bottle capacity of just under 1000 bottles. Throughout the project Curt was extremely understanding and easy to work with. They were prompt and courteous, and above all kept every promise they gave me. Every time his crew was on site they were Aces and I cannot be more thankful for the beautiful job that they did.

Technically i’d give them 4.7 stars. Let’s get right to details. Pro’s - you will be super happy with the finished product. Obviously this is the most important thing, right? When I was younger I did fine woodworking and even exhibited in some shows. I have an eye for quality woodwork. This is well done....... - they have an excellent eye for design. They improved my design tremendously and rendered really appropriate 3D models. - excellent fit and finish - awe factor - my cellar draws rave compliments from a collection of hardened New Yorkers. It’s quite special. They killed it. - flexible - a small support problem arose, I suggested an improvement, they agreed and we altered the design at the end for a slightly different solution. No charge. Super easy. Con’s - well, these things do cost money, don’t they. Initial estimate did go up but it was all baked into the terms. Honestly though - luxury products cost.... - payment terms. Usually I only like delivering full payment at the end (say, 50% up front, 50% on completion). Here you pay basically half up front, 45% when they are about to start work, and 5% at the end. It does make one feel one doesn’t have leverage. - they’re in demand. Welcome to working with quality artisans in the nyc area. Final little details can drag as they get pulled away to other jobs. If I grade on a curve for nyc construction i’d say they are about average in this regard (which means you are kind of at their mercy for scheduling, but hey, again, that’s life). - basically if you’ve done construction in NY/NJ then these guys are a piece of cake. If you haven’t then just be zen about time and you’ll get a dream cellar. All in all - i’d use them again in a heartbeat.

We were thoroughly impressed with Joes professionalism, communication and final work product from the initial planning stages to install . The workmanship on. all aspects of the job was impeccable. Joseph and Curtis have designed and constructed our wine rooms in our last two homes and I can't say enough what a pleasure the experience has been. Joe met us a few years ago when we consider a wine cellar. Subsequently, we thought we might be moving so we canceled a cellar project. Recently, we agreed to not move so we decided to have a wine cellar. Joe met us again, studied our basement for a possible wine cellar. We never thought that it would never be able to place a cellar in our basement because of too many pipes, ducts, short ceiling, wires, small area, etc. However, the cellar exceeded our plans. We have a capacity cellar of 850 bottles. The room was rebuilt, wooden walls, ceiling, floor, insulation, lights and a refrigerator. Then the racks were installed. All was excellent. Joe and his team were friendly and professional. I would like to add that one of his team's worker fixed a broken mail slot in our front door and he did this quickly without addition cost. Excellent. If we move again, we would use them again. I would recommend them to all.

We hired JOSEPH and CURTIS to design and construct the conversion of an old barn/garage into a state-of-the-art, 7,000 bottle wine cellar. It was a challenge to completely control the environment to make it wine-friendly... we have 14 ft ceilings and about 1,500 square feet, half below grade and half above. Curt was a problem solver and made the unique space work. He was creative, responsive and worked well with us and the other trades. He understood our desire to combine a large capacity with the look and feel of a chateau cellar. Their design is gorgeous and seemlessly integrates the clean and modern lines of the walnut racking and hand-crafted ladders, which slide on iron rods to make use of the height, with our existing antique chestnut beams and stone. As the photographer for this company, I have worked on around 100 or so projects with Joseph and Curtis over a period of about 7 years and I have seen all kinds of traditional and contemporary Wine Cellar designs. “Contemporary lovers” may not like the feel of a traditional design and vice versa, but there are a few things that are consistent with each installation. They are: their use of quality hardware, professional skilled carpenters, plumbers, electricians and even artists and also a willingness to work closely with their client’s suggestions for the overall design of a wine cellar. If however their customers ask for something that is outside the operational design of a particular installation, Joseph and Curtis will speak up and not simply “YES” their prospective clients to death just to get the job. If I could afford a wine cellar and the wine to fill it with, I would hire these people, because I have learned what to look for in a wine cellar that doesn’t only look good, but has been designed to operate with minimal maintenance down the road. Curt just designed and completed building out a new cellar in my new home. The result is gorgeous, with solid white oak hardwood racks that fill out the cellar efficiently and beautifully. The cellar has vapor barrier insulation foam in the walls, and is fully temperature controlled with a unit he recommended that sits adjacent to the cellar and takes up zero room inside... Not only are Curtis and Joseph experts at building wine cellars, but they also know plenty about wine - and therefore understand what the serious wine lover is looking for in a cellar - conditions that will gracefully age his/her wines as long as possible - and look beautiful while doing so. I dealt with Curt Dahl for both the design and building execution of the cellar. I feel that the strengths of dealing with Curt were: 1) the design, with all of the details specific for a wine cellar, was superb; 2) the custom racking, with higher grade wood (in our case mahogany), built by Joseph & Curtis was both aesthetically beautiful and very practical; and 3) the construction crews were knowledgable, very respectful, and easy to deal with. Overall, Joseph & Curtis did a first-rate job with which we are very happy.

They were fantastic! I love the final product and am very impressed with their patience in designing the room with me (and all of the changes that I requested). I definitely would recommend them!

First contacted J&C in Nov. '14 and after a site visit to review existing condition and discuss our intended project scope, a ballpark estimate of cost (a price range +/- $6k, depending on final cellar capacity, finishes etc) , together with a preliminary scope of work was furnished by J&C. Having agreed on the preliminary scope, we paid J&C a design retainer fee which authorized them to produce 3D CAD drawings for our review and approval. Initial iteration of design dwgs were received within 3 weeks. After some review and discussion, revised dwgs were received after an additional 3 weeks, bringing us to mid-Dec. '14. After finalizing all necessary details, a contact for a 900-1000 bottle capacity cellar was entered into in the last days of 2014, signed and a 50% deposit paid in early Jan. '15. Late Jan., J&C visited site with person responsible for performing all demolition and construction. Actual work was commenced in mid to late Feb. which involved removal and demolition work followed by electrical rough-in and existing plumbing line relocation. The so-called 'construction phase', which includes all of the previously described work, plus the insulation, sheetrock and flooring installation. These items were generally (but not completely) done by mid-March. At this juncture, J&C needed to perform detailed field measurements in order to get final design dimensions prior to fabrication of the custom bottle racks to be installed in the space. We also selected wall paint color and wood species and finish for the rack system in this time frame. By the end of March, the final design for the wine racks was approved for fabrication. From early April through mid-May only sporadic items of work were performed on-site...i.e.- electrical work (lighting install, power for cooling unit), taping and spackling of sheetrock, insulated door install, install cooling unit through wall, etc.). Fabrication of the rack system was completed by late May and installed over the course of 5-6 working days. The majority of work was completed by the end of May '15, with only minor punch list, cleanup and patching work remaining to be done. This work was done in a single visit in mid-June. The scheduling and coordination of the work and subcontract trades (electrical, plumbing) was, at times, less than desirable or optimal. As a result, the project likely lingered for longer than may have otherwise been expected. Overall, the workmanship of the final product is excellent and on that basis would recommend J&C for anyone considering a project of a similar nature.

Joseph did a great job of designing a beautiful cellar of white oak out of an old toy closet. I love sitting in the cellar and looking at the about 500 bottles it holds. Project was slightly delayed by backorder of a door but otherwise very timely and easy to work with in creating the design.

Joseph and Curtis just installed a custom wine racking for my wine room. It came out beautifully. Mike, the project manager, was masterful in designing and then tweaking the design to get my ideas incorporated into the design.

Joseph and Curtis installed my cellar 3 years ago. Since that time my refridgeration unit did not work properly even though his refrigeration technician had been to my home multiple times. It was decided that the air unit needed to be replaced and that would fix the problem. After the work was done the unit was turned on and in a matter of hours my entire basement smelled of burnt tires. Exasperated, I called another company (Washington Valley Cellars) who determined that the unit's motor had burned out due to incorrect wiring. I witnessed smoke coming from it when we turned it on again. At my own expense ($3600) I had the problem fixed and it is finally working the way it should. Joe and Curt are nice guys but it was clear they do not understand how to service clients. If I had not constantly pursued this issue it would still not be fixed today.

Joseph and Curtis built 1000+ bottle wine room for us in White Oak which included wood cabinetry plus metals racks. From the design phase through final installation, the job went very smoothly. They were very helpful in counseling us in terms of the types of materials to use and also in providing us with several iterations of preliminary drawings. Having never created a white room, the drawings were quite helpful in allowing us to visualize the room, from all angles, while also ensuring that we had enough space for all of our bottles. The two gentlemen that installed the cabinetry and racks, Alex and Adner, did an exceptional job. Their carpentry work was meticulous and they were both extremely accommodative making suggestions and allowing us to make ad hoc changes as the installation moved all. All in all, we were very pleased with all aspects of the job and the final product.

The customer service and communication were always above par during the whole process. As always, custom made items in NYC take much longer than expected so have patience (easier said then done). With that being said, they gave me realistic expectations on timing but it still takes even longer and nothing you can do about that! Worth the wait and they did not rush through it just to finish.

Joe from J&C designed a modern glassed-in reach-in wine cellar that improved on my vision by combining both wood and metal racks and then delivered a final space that exceeded my expectations! The craftsmanship was meticulous, and Joe was able to match the wood stain to that used in the nearby bar cabinetry. The final product is amazing and a work of art. Their subs were professional and courteous, and Joe interfaced well with my GC (who was in charge of the larger basement project of which this was one piece). Although there were a few construction challenges along the way, Joe and his team calmly and creatively overcame them. Finally, Joe was great to consult with about getting the cellar filled with good-quality wines at a fair price point.

I worked directly with Curtis for the design and installation of my home wine cellar. He and his team did a tremendous job. I am not a visual person so I sometimes had a difficult time describing exactly what I wanted. That didn't prove to be an issue for Curtis. I could not be more impressed with the custom wine cellar that Joseph and Curtis built for my home. I found them via an internet search and they were the first hit that came up...and after I watched a few videos on their website and saw their work I knew they were the company for me. I sent an email inquiry and had a call back from them within 10 minutes, they visited my home within two days and the next thing you know they started work on the project! I had a design in mind and they made suggested alterations along the way to maximize the cellar space as well as to enhance the design. Despite some challenges along the way they never asked for a nickel more than the agreed amount and they've been very responsive to my follow-up phone calls. The room had some angles as well as different levels to the ceiling. Joseph & Curtis did a great job drawing up a plan that incorporated the unique aspects of the room. The built very attractive wine racks and cabinetry and did a wonderful job with the electrical portion by added some accent lighting that really showed off our wine collection and the room itself.
