Modern Vermont Guest House

Design New England Magazine has published a full-scale story about this project. Please visit our website under "Press" to see the complete album for this and to learn more about this project. Mitra provided both architectural and interior design services for this project to convert an existing art studio into a guest-house which also doubles as double as a forest retreat for the homeowners. As part of this renovation, an addition was added to allow space for a new space for bedrooms and a loft. Mitra's design goal for this project was to create designs that subtly suggested a modern tree-house echoing the beautiful natural rocky ledge where this house sits on top of. To incorporate homeowners appreciation for both modern Western and Asian architecture, design concepts were created where the architecture of the east meets west. Simplicity and elegance of this design makes for an ideal retreat house, where the homeowners can connect with nature and each other as a family, and relax and rejuvenate. Much of the design concepts were created artfully to bring the outdoors indoors; The bathroom theme of concrete counters which runs from one side of the room into the shower area suggests the boldness and heavy lines of the rocky ledges. The stone pebble flooring subtly suggests a river running through the room. Color schemes were also carefully selected to further bring relaxing colors of nature surrounded by rocky ledges. Furnishings were thoughtfully chosen by Mitra for the interiors to bring in simplicity and function in this small space. The mid-century furniture was a perfect choice complementing the designs for the architecture and addressing the spiritual and practical functions needs of this project. A local artist was commissioned to take artful photographs from the natural surroundings of this property. Her photographs were then infused on a floating brushed chrome plate. All built-ins including the queen bed and two children's bed was also custom designed by Mitra.
