Lake Bluff, IL Modern Garden

The idea for this backyard renovation was to create an outdoor living space with the design aesthetic of a modern rooftop garden. Notwithstanding the suburban home’s typical backyard makeup: garage, driveway, neighbors, this landscape has many characteristics of an urban space; an efficient, geometric layout, modern adaptation of traditional materials, screening for privacy, dramatic textural contrasts, and an updated planting palette.

The spacious dining and lounging area in front of a prominent stone fireplace is the main focus of activity, re-claiming the formerly underused rear corner of the yard and extending use of the yard into late fall. A small grilling area is out-of the way, but close to the rear doors. Three large faux stone planters are used to impart a sense of separation between the grilling area and the dining area.

Plant varieties in the garden were chosen for their unique qualities and distinctive textures, color, and forms. Several types of bluestone, laid in varying fashions, as well as hand-cut Windsor stone veneer, unify the home's architecture and built elements.

The full-range bluestone was hand-selected to achieve the widest color range and to get a greater quantity of rust/iron oxide pieces than what normally comes in a mixed load. In higher-traffic areas the bluestone was tight fit.

Bluestone, in its many expressions, is the only paving material used in the garden to maintain a sense of unity, including: irregular, full-range flag; chips; dimensioned full-range pieces; and thermal-treated blue/blue rectangles.

In the spring and fall the modern faux stone planters are filled with colorful annuals. In the summer they function as petite culinary gardens, with no bending or weeding required.

The walk from the driveway is flanked by beds of Liriope as a substitute for turfgrass. With two large dogs, keeping the old lawn in good shape required constant effort. The new planting scheme meets the client's goal to reduce maintenance.

By dividing the backyard into a series of outdoor rooms, the garden offers unique views from every location. Placing trees in the center of the garden obscures sight-lines effectively, making the backyard look larger than it is.

The veneer for the fireplace was chosen for its color, but was only available in mixed sizes which didn’t work for a modern setting pattern with consistent horizontal lines. The stone was hand-cut on site to create linear strips
