North Oaks - Traditional New Home

Early in 2010, the owners of this home were actively looking for a site to build a comfortable, well designed and thoughtfully appointed home, which was energy efficient and low maintenance. While visiting friends living in a new home built by Bob Michels Construction near Stillwater, the owners loved what they saw. They both liked the feel of the home, its features and its finish quality. They inquired who had built their home and immediately called Bob Michels.

Within hours the owner met with Bob Michels on this lot. The owners immediately fell in love with the vision Bob set fourth for this property. Plans were drawn, contracts signed and construction started within 3 months. The project began in June of 2010 and was completed and ready for occupancy one week before Thanksgiving 2010. The homeowner’s both actively and enthusiastically participated in the design and building process with Bob and his design team.
A casual and yet inviting, elegant home was the goal. Among the many ‘Green Building’ techniques and features included in this home are the geothermal heating and cooling system, spray foam insulation, locally sourced and produced cabinetry & windows, “natural site preservation,” and use the of renewable and resourced materials were all on the wish list and were incorporated into the home.

The location of the current paver driveway was previously an old farm road built by former “North Oaks Farm” owners James J. Hill or his son Louis. The home features a low maintenance yard and exterior, which opens up to visitors as they approach the home. The handcrafted knotty alder front door opens to a large foyer and views through the home and many of its “public spaces.” To the right of the front door is an office with double sliding glass pocket doors, which invite you in to relax in the large seating area or get your paperwork completed at the desks with file drawers and bookcases.

The foyer opens into the formal dining room which features large window and paneled wainscot walls. Most of adjoining first floor rooms share the 4” rustic hickory wood flooring. A butler’s pantry with custom cabinetry is the transition to the kitchen. Straight ahead you see the great room with its formal fireplace, coffered ceiling, bookcase with rolling library ladder and a 16’ wide patio door that opens to the screen porch.

The screen porch has a vaulted ceiling with skylights, sconce lights and a chandelier to light a large gathering area complete with dining table. A gas fireplace adds warmth and charm to this outdoor space.
The large kitchen hearth room and dinette has its own rustic stone fireplace, reclaimed pine timber beams, granite counter tops, wet bar, and cabinetry with patina finishes charm and project the relaxing attitude these rooms project. From the kitchen you can access the mudroom with its paneled walls, ‘plop’ area cabinet, laundry room, closet and powder room with access to the oversize 3-car garage. The master suite features patio doors with great outdoor views. The master bath has a large his and hers closet, “woven pattern stone flooring,”painted wood paneled walls, farmhouse bathtub, large separate vanities, tile shower and toilet compartment.

The lower level of the home include three “guest suites” with their own private bathrooms and walk in closets. The large gathering room is open to the stairway up and to the patios and entertainment areas outside of the home.
