Zen Master Bath

This is master bath in Riverside, CT. The previous bathroom was 15 years old and the shower was leaking into the kitchen beneath. This leak prompted an entire master bath/suite makeover.

This home is a Dutch colonial and there was unused attic space above the bedroom and bathroom. We vaulted both ceilings and the results are amazing. We added a skylight in the bathroom and a functional window in the shower. What was once a dark bathroom with a small window is now light and bright.

We chose to remove the bathtub. The bathroom was tight and there was no way to center the bathtub beneath the window. Removing the tub enabled us to make the shower larger and gave us room to add an unexpected console, blue and white ginger jar lamp and artwork. It feels more like a room than a bathroom.

Another way we gained space was to incorporate some wasted space in the hallway into the bathroom and to add a pocket door. The door is 150 years old. We had layers of paint removed, but left some of the finish. We had it sealed because we were concerned that traces of lead were left behind. We love the character the antique door adds.

Our favorite details are the radiant heat floors, the soaring ceiling, the huge shower, all the natural light, having a functional window in the shower, the ample storage and the medicine cabinets with outlets inside that enable us to keep our countertop clutter-free.
