Casa San Francisco

In one of San Francisco's quaint hillside neighborhoods this renovation and addition transforms a deteriorating Victorian house into a contemporary home filled with light and layered with a rich palette of materials. A new color scheme, decorative moldings, broad windows and terraced gardens are respectful of its setting yet add sparkle and texture to the street. While the exterior improvements were primarily cosmetic to allow this home to blend into its traditional neighborhood, the interior was totally gutted and the roof reshaped to completely transform this into a thoroughly modern environment.

The entry leads into a spacious open main floor with living, dining, kitchen, office and powder rooms. High ceilings, skylights and carefully placed windows create sculptured spaces shaped with light and strong, sleek materials. Spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline from the living room balance the intimate views to a sunny wood deck with glass railings and colorful garden off the dining room and kitchen, multiplied in the reflections of a carefully placed mirror and glistening chandelier.

Softly washed oak flooring, glass railings, white lacquered cabinets, white concrete counters, stainless steel appliances, and a floating fireplace give a dramatic, clean feeling to the spaces. Bold touches of color – olive green, tangerine, sunflower yellow, ruby red – give focus to art or particular features in this home. The stairway to the second floor wraps gray concrete treads and red glass risers around a glass wine cooler. Stark, sculptural fixtures imported from Italy stand as art on the red composite tiles of the powder room.

The newly shaped roof spans over three bedrooms and a double high overlook from a glass wrapped bridge at the upper floor. A two-sided fireplace embraced within a red glass closet links the master bedroom and bath. Floor to ceiling glass divides the functions of the bath and sculptural fixtures reflect in wide mirrored walls. Two children’s bedrooms share a lively tiled bath and overlook the rear garden. Dramatic lighting, contemporary Italian furniture and an eclectic collection of art represent the owner’s tastes, comfortable in this contemporary ‘City’ home.
