This great room (figuratively and literally) was being used as a casual dining and seating area. The original kitchen was a cramped 10' x 12' dark corner with three doorways and a staircase interrupting the flow. When I first walked into this space, I couldn't imagine rebuilding the kitchen anywhere but here! Photography by Nathan Spotts

The West facing wall also had two large double window units but these were the only windows with the shades drawn. As it happens, the neighbor's house and unattractive shed are close on that side. The issue of where to place the fridge and double oven....solved!

One other key element to making this design work in the existing space was that the existing windows happened to be at the right height to allow the base cabinets to sneak in perfectly.

The island was built using rustic knotty Alder as a counterpoint to the off-white painted cabinetry. The stunning "Blue Dunes" leathered granite really accentuated the marriage of interior and exterior space. The gardens are just amazing in the warm months.

Our friends and neighbors at S K Lavery supplied the Sub Zero and Thermador appliances. Our clients have had great luck with this combination.

The natural look of leathered granite really is the perfect aesthetic bridge between the kitchen and garden....

This pull-out houses utensils, knives and still has room for containers below. Maximum function is a critical element of every Gilley Kitchen.

This plan obviously allows for more than one cook to work at the same time- the former space made that impractical to say the least.

We like to incorporate European design elements where they can help function and aesthetics. In this island, this drawer behind a drawer allows a pleasing symmetry while providing 36" of cutlery storage within one step of the dishwasher.

Our good friend Jerry Lalancet makes our custom Black Walnut (and other wood species) butcher block counter and island tops. This top conceals a USB charging station built in to the top drawer of this sideboard.

The devil's in the details... Note that the inside corners of this top have a French-mitered edge detail as opposed to a radius. It's much harder to build but man does it look beautiful. The fact that Jerry sources the wood locally, builds these tops in his local small wood shop and has fair pricing makes these gorgeous works of art a no brainer.

Great use of 6" next to the fridge in my opinion...

The original kitchen was cramped, dark and oh so close to its rightful place...

Look, it was what it was. This was truly a great opportunity to transform this home within the existing footprint. For perspective, this wall is where the sideboard is now with the custom Walnut top.
