Tenleytown Rowhouse

The clients contacted FORMA while still living in Central America. They had purchased this 3-story rowhouse in Tenleytown in Northwest Washington, DC and commissioned FORMA to completely renovate the home to fit their lifestyle and extensive collection of sculpture, painting and photography, while they were still abroad. FORMA re-configured the apartment, raised the doors to the outdoor deck and allowed for more light to filter throughout. Wide-plank espresso wood floors contrast with crisp white-laquered shelving, white metal railings, a stone fireplace mass and a European style kitchen, while walnut furniture and cabinetry bring warmth and visual interest throughout. A variety of lighting options help animate the space and highlight the amazing art collection.
The couple lives there with their Weimaraner Elsa.

Client comments: "I hired Forma to completely remodel my 2,000 sf unit. Although I was stationed overseas while the remodeling was taking place, everything went very smoothly. They created a modern open airy space full of charm and a perfect place to hang our art. We also furnished it following Forma's advice and design concept."

The project was featured in the March/April issue of HOME & DESIGN magazine. http://www.homeanddesign.com/2014/02/18/remote-control

The doors to the patio were raised to allow for more daylight to pour in. A wall of stone veneer surrounds the fireplace mass, and comfortable modern furniture sit on a custom wool and silk rug that reflects the light differently at all times of day, becoming a living work of art. A floating Cha-Cha table in walnut is large enough for books, flowers and food while watching tv....More

There is a 2-step drop to the sunken Living room level, that creates the sense of higher ceilings. The espresso-stained wood floors are continuous throughout, and allow for views back towards the entry way, the dining area and the kitchen beyond. Daylight floods in from both sides of the townhouse. Photos: Geoffrey Hodgdon

A dramatic set-up greets the visitor on arrival. A dropped ceiling with an LED cove, a sculptural pendant by Artemide and the work of photographer Manual Morquecho surround walnut cabinetry in the buffet, the AV cabinets, the glass-top dining table base and the lower kitchen cabinets. The dining area is furnished with a glass top square table that seats 8, with individual leather seats and benches all around. The glass top allows for the sculptural walnut base to be seen, while a walnut buffet and walnut lower cabinets in the kitchen unify the spaces. The kitchen features upper cabinets in white lacquer and an LED lit back-painted glass backsplash. photos...

The area into the kitchen was opened up and reconfigured so you walk around a free-standing island that houses the full height appliances on the kitchen side, and creates an art-display floating shelf on the foyer side. The stair railing was custom designed in painted steel with a wood cap that matches the espresso stained floors and steps. The extensive art collection of pai...More

The stair landing on the upper floor was widened to allow for a floor-to-ceiling assembly of wide floating shelves where the various art-related books, small artifacts and mementos from their travels are displayed under LED lighting. A skylight was introduced that floods the stairwell with light. At the end of the corridor is the private study. Photos: Geoffrey Hodgdon

The private study faces the front of the house and is bathed in natural light. An antique desk and chair over an antique rug are juxtaposed with the modern silkscreens of photographer Manuel Morquecho, who is one of the owners. Photos: Geoffrey Hodgdon

The guest bathroom, off the stair landing, was fitted with a custom vanity, mirror and cabinetry, a soaking tub and intricate porcelain tile mosaic walls. The corridor leading to the bedroom featured a series of 5 portraits of each of the owners from their travels around the world, while the last row features 5 similar portraits of their Weimaraner Elsa. The rest of the dressing area is beyond the sky-lit vanity area, to the right. A floating ceiling with an LED border supports different lighting sour...More

The double vanity is separated from the actual Master Bathroom, and allows for the owners to occupy the Master Bath space at the same time. A large skylight was added, that floods the space with natural light. A washer/dryer unit was also added in the transition area that leads to the large sky-lit dressing area, that occupies what used to be a window-less den. Photos: Geoffre...More
