Project Description:
The Valley Flower Home and Patio Show is held every spring for local landscape contractors and vendors to display new products and mock landscape displays for a weekend in an enclosed arena during early March. This year, 8 to 10 local contractors took part in the show that allows 4 days for setup and 1 for take-down. Each was allotted approximately 1200 SF of space to set up a welcoming display full of color that would provide visitors to the display with ideas of what could be done in their own settings.

Our plans began with a large, open, and welcoming patio and terrace similar to what one might see in a typical back yard. A simple 2x6 deck covered with 1/2" plywood formed the platform for a raised terrace that is framed with a custom made wrought iron pergola and backed with a row of Thuja 'Emerald Green'. Below is a patio with the same Techo Bloc Inca Slab pavers surrounded by a seating wall with decorative pillars on each end. In the center pillar, a sheer decent falls kit was installed to provide a focal point for people walking the pathways around the display.

The challenge was to find plantings that would provide interest in the early March timeframe. Our selections were based primarily on plants that had winter interest, such as Thuja, Cornus sericea 'balleyi' and 'Flaviramea', Buxus, Hamamelis, Betula, and Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Golden Mop'. To make setup and cleanup easier heavy quantities of these plants were placed closely together to cover the ground as opposed to more traditional spacing and mulched beds. In the end, less than 1 wheelbarrow of mulch was used in the display.

For an extra punch of color, we worked with local bulb grower to force Tulipa, Narcissus, and Hyacinth bulbs so that they would be just opening in time for the show. This added the extra bit of spring color visitors to the show were so very glad to see after a long, drab winter season.
