Tropical Residence in the Florida Keys

Situated on the Florida coast, this project involved demolishing part of an existing house and adding a two-story extension including an interior courtyard and infinity pool. The owner is an avid gardener so a French-style trellis entrance in a fresh green color was designed to announce the “tropics” opening act.

In an unusual move, we did away with the dining room though the hostess loves to entertain and instead created three different eating areas inside and out. The interior eating area was set up as a library display table for orchids that doubled as a dining table during inclement weather.

The homeowners desired a stylishly sophisticated but relaxed seaside residence with several out-door spaces to gather and enjoy life. The paint colors and treatments were selected to reflect the “sunshine“ tropical location.
Their vision was turned into reality by adding whimsical touches such as the painted ceiling with the famous local parrots, custom paint color treatments and rugs with tropical motifs. And of course a pineapple finial on the staircase post to indicate “Welcome” to all who enter.

Since the homeowner is fond of gardening, a French-style trellis entrance was designed in a fresh apple-green color to contrast against the color of the house to set the tone. That color was then applied as an accent color to the shutters and the metal roof. Photographed by Bruce Miller
