2,400-SQUARE-FOOT COOPERATIVE | GUT RENOVATION

Custom millwork and built-ins create a harmonious link between old and new in a prewar landmark.

Custom mouldings and doors crafted in Best & Company’s own woodworking mills restored character to the gut-renovated interior. The geometric motif on the raised-panel doors pays homage to the building’s Art Deco lineage. Painting walls and woodwork the same color creates a sense of continuity that makes the room feel larger and more luminous.

A gut renovation offers the opportunity to start fresh: But it doesn’t mean forsaking the property’s roots or personal style. Careful replication of the apartment’s 12-inch-high base mouldings, plaster crown detail, and radiator enclosures respect the building’s prewar vintage while making it comfortable for contemporary living.

Bigger, brighter, better:The white-marble-tiledbath is timeless. Statuary marble subway tile, polished-nickel fixtures, and mosaic floors supply period charm in a pristine master bath with a walk-in shower and a soaking tub with a ledge large enough to rest a wineglass, scented candle, book or iPad on.
