Mercer Island Residence

This contemporary house, originally designed in the 1970s was remodeled to expand the existing kitchen and dining room in a way that respects the architectural legacy of the home. The curved exterior wall of the new dining room space repeats an existing interior curved wall and extends this frequently used space into the wooded hillside. Walls between the kitchen and dining room were removed, allowing a more generous configuration for the kitchen, with an island that lends itself to large family gatherings.
The kitchen cabinets are Japanese sen wood, with Brazilian slate countertops and metallic glazed tile back splash. A walk-in pantry is tucked behind the refrigerator space. Windows and doors are designed to maximize a connection to the dramatic setting.
