Entertain McLean

Beautiful McLean home with elegant living room and black trimmed foyer with chandelier. On the second floor, we built a dream laundry room that is large, and functional with an ironing center, plenty of cabinetry and counter space to sort and fold clothes. We converted the attic into a home theater replete with path lighting, aisle seating, and a fantastic star light ceiling for the ultimate home entertainment experience. The theater include 4 hidden doors, flush with the wall, that lead to storage space.
A husband and wife wanted to transform their existing unfinished attic into a home theater that combines their contrasting aesthetics. Seating for 6, soundproofing and attic access were important. An updated laundry and bathroom were added on a strict budget.
Access to the new attic space was achieved by reconfiguring two bedrooms and closets below to allow for a full staircase which begins near the existing landing, enhancing traffic flow in the hallway.
The husband loved the initial design concept, but it was too modern for the wife. To achieve a balance between their opposing styles, we added traditional elements including acoustical panels which mimic wainscoting and vintage art-deco style sconces in a polished nickel finish. The floating bar is modern, with a traditional paneled base. The LED light strips in the niches and star ceiling are modern, while the path lighting and ogee granite edge are traditional.
Another challenge we faced with this theater transformation was dampening noise from the sound system to the bedrooms below. Double ¾” plywood flooring with heavy weight metal embedded rubber matting was used under the carpeting, adding mass to reduce low frequency noises. Quiet Rock insulated walls and floor cavities on both sides of the wall framing as well as in the bedrooms reduced hi-frequency noises.
Four flush doors with touch latch hardware are nearly invisible; the doors lead to concealed storage around the theater keeping walls free of A/V clutter. Built-in cabinetry creates a mini bar and an art niche adds character.
Columns and trim work create a cadence on the walls with artful, incase acoustical panels designed to help maximize acoustical quality. An acoustical panel and HVAC return grill are cleverly hidden behind the big screen TV. Sconces provide ambient lighting, supplemented by path lighting for safety and recessed fixtures for task lighting. A fiber optic star ceiling -including shooting stars- was inspired by the concept of an oversized sunroof. The sparkling focal point adds emphasis and unique character to the theater.
Countertops at the floating bar and mini fridge niche are black galaxy granite creating repetition and continuity. Recliners provide seating for six with extra seating options at the bar.
We reconfigured the hall bath adding valuable functional space to the room. A new layout allows for more natural light and has a new fresh aesthetic. We used economical materials such as Silestone countertops, faux-travertine tile, and a stock vanity with custom hardware.
The laundry room was builder grade with no storage or work space, inadequate lighting and drab looking finishes. New cabinetry, tile floors and cove molding create symmetry with the rest of the house. Industrial fluorescent lighting was replaced with a more polished surface mount fixture. The new, extra deep utility sink tucks into a cabinet and a counter atop the washer and dryer creates a place to fold clothes.
