Moontower
These East Siders previously described their front porch as a hazard. Formerly framed and sheathed with plywood and a completely tiled finish - the porch was cracking, moving, and rotting. A new baby was on the way so the old porch had to go! With a goal of keeping the yard comfortable and informal Moontower created a modern and slightly rustic two sided porch. Equally approachable for everyday use from the alley as well as for guests from the street, the porch was completely transformed and extended with a gravel landing 30" below the deck height. Despite the tile shell, the piers and framing were in good shape, so salvaging the core elements was an option. Rough sawn sawn cedar 4x material, steel tube and bar as well as cut and crushed limestone were used throughout. Working with the existing porch location and respecting tree locations provided site specific opportunities for a unique solution.

Tree Top Builders
A very rustic tree house we built in Milroy, PA. The treehouse was framed used rough sawn hickory with rough milled pine siding and cedar post railings. By far the coolest part is the stair way leading up to the tree house. The treads are made of white oak with a cedar truck providing the support. A true woodsman's getaway.

Color Craftsmen: Fireplace Makeovers
This wood ceiling needed something to tone down the grain in the planks. We were able to create a wash that did exactly that. The floors (reclaimed red oak from a pre-Civil War barn) needed to have their different colors highlighted, not homogenized. Instead of staining the floor, we used a tung oil and beeswax finish that was hand buffed. Our clients wanted to have reclaimed wood beams in their ceiling, but could not use true old beams as they would not be sturdy enough to support the roof. We took their fresh- cut fir beams and used synthetic plasters, paints, and glazes to give them an authentic aged look. This new riverfront townhouse is on three levels. The interiors blend clean contemporary elements with traditional cottage architecture. It is luxurious, yet very relaxed. The Weiland sliding door is fully recessed in the wall on the left. The fireplace stone is called Hudson Ledgestone by NSVI. The cabinets are custom. The cabinet on the left has articulated doors that slide out and around the back to reveal the tv. It is a beautiful solution to the hide/show tv dilemma that goes on in many households! The wall paint is a custom mix of a Benjamin Moore color, Glacial Till, AF-390. The trim paint is Benjamin Moore, Floral White, OC-29.
