Mid-sized ornate three-story wood exterior home photo in Boston

Renovation of an historic home. An addition between the existing house and barn in Hingham's Glad Tidings Historic District created a new entry, informal living room, kitchen with cooking fireplace and pantry, and deck. The addition, with it's clerestory, provides lots of natural lighting. The client now has a large free-flowing, light filled, area to entertain that they were missing in the historic house. Inspiration for a small contemporary detached two-car garage remodel in Seattle

The Mazama Cabin is located at the end of a beautiful meadow in the Methow Valley, on the east slope of the North Cascades Mountains in Washington state. The 1500 SF cabin is a superb place for a weekend get-a-way, with a garage below and compact living space above. The roof is “lifted” by a continuous band of clerestory windows, and the upstairs living space has a large glass wall facing a beautiful view of the mountain face known locally as Goat Wall. The project is characterized by sustainable cedar siding and recycled metal roofing; the walls and roof have 40% higher insulation values than typical construction. The cabin will become a guest house when the main house is completed in late 2012.

This is take two on ‘The Bent House’, which was canceled after a design board did not approve the modern style in a conservative neighbrohood. So we decided to take it one step further and now it is the ‘bent and sliced house’. The bend is from the original design (a.k.a.The Bent House), and is a gesture to the curved slope of the site. This curve, coincidentally, is almost the same of the previous design’s site, and thus could be re-utilized. Similiar to Japanese Oragami, this house unfolds like a piece of slice paper from the sloped site. The negative space between the slices creates wonderful clerestories for natural light and ventilation. Photo Credit: Mike Sinclair

Stephanie, there are times I really like the look of stainless steel shelving. I know how sloppy I am when putting dishes away (damp) and I worry wood would start looking bad. I just don't want the kitchen to look too cold with all the staiinless. - tandlmcbrayer

Inspiration for a contemporary living room remodel in San Francisco

Daniel Liebermann, who apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West, designed the 1,000-sq-ft Radius House in 1960. The current owners, Andrew and Kim Todd, contractor Kevin Smith and designer Vivian Dwyer agreed that the goal of this project was to insert modern elements into this house of the earth. The roof was rebuilt to allow for adequate ventilation and for a proper electrical system. It was necessary to redesign the kitchen, refurbish concrete floors, wood beams, metal pipes and resurface the canted, curved brick walls with smooth, white plaster. The space at the rear was rearranged into a master bedroom with an open washing area, separate powder room and closet/dressing room. Every space opens to views of the giant redwoods that surround the property, connecting with the outside and making the house feel bigger. The movement of light during the day activates different parts of the house, while layering the lighting carries this magical effect to the night. This house is a perfect example of how to live well in a small space. Photographer: Joe Fletcher
The ceiling is an example of radiation. Radiation is when it starts in the middle and dispurts outward. The ceiling middle is on the far left and the bars continue outward in beams. - karlee_harrington
