Which states offer interior design opportunities?

Leading the pack as the number-one state where interior designers are in high demand is Virginia, followed by Maryland, Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington.  Look for the lightest blue in the map above to discover other states that have fewer interior designers per capita. States colored with dark blue indicate areas that might have a lot of interior design projects, but for which competition is likely heavier. To help you succeed in those states, read the resources below to learn how you can stand out from your competition.

When determining the best states for interior designers, you might want to consider states where there is less competition. For example, Alaska was the state with the lowest concentration of interior designers, followed by Wyoming, North Dakota, Mississippi and West Virginia. Remember to note that these states also have fewer interior design projects compared to other parts of the U.S., so it’s always important to balance opportunity with market size when determining the best states for interior designers to start a business.

What is the best US city for interior designers?

Designers searching for a place to launch their business might want to consider McLean, VA, Baltimore, MD, Boston, MA or Seattle, WA - as these are the cities where we see the most interior design projects (think demand) but the least number of interior designers (think supply). Click on a state in the map above to reveal the top cities where interior designers are needed most in order from highest to lowest demand.

On the other hand, the cities that pose the lowest opportunity for designers breaking into the industry are Jacksboro, AK, Evansville, WY, Erskine, ND, and Scott Depot, WV.

How do other states measure up?

Scan the table below to find your state or a state you’re considering doing business in to get a gauge of how concentrated an area is with interior design projects and interior designers.

  • A Geographic Concentration score of Very High indicates that it might require more creativity and legwork to build your interior design reputation, but there's a good amount of projects to be had.
  • A Geographic Concentration score of Very Low may be more limited in the number of projects to be found, and therefore in potential for interior designers.
  • Use the Interior Design Project Score and Interior Designer Score to see which states have the most projects or designers, without considering a state’s concentration.
