Easy and breezy is the basis for tropical design — getting back to nature and a taste of the jungle. Gauzy curtains and canopies mix with dark woods and punchy florals. Natural textures feel right at home with lush plants, and a chic fan makes everything comfortable.

Netting draped softly around your bed (even if you don't have a canopy bed) creates the feel of a tropical retreat. Pick up preconstructed netting (complete with hanging hardware) or do it yourself with soft, gauzy fabric and a hook in the ceiling.

Tropical plants are a must. Try a mixture of tabletop and floor plants. Take note of how much light they'll need.

If you're lucky enough to have an outdoor space, bring your tropical style outside to play. Make the most of whatever space you have with seating, colorful pillows and, of course, a spot to put your umbrella drink.

Ceiling fans can be a huge eyesore, but in parts of the country (and true tropical homes) they're just necessary. Why not choose one that looks chic?

When it comes to fabrics in a tropical-style room, you don't have to go totally Hawaiian-shirt print (although that wouldn't be a faux pas). Look for bold patterns with lots of contrast, punchy florals and lots of fresh green.
