Serene Bathroom Oasis With a Nature-Inspired Feel
A smarter layout, warm wood and elegant details give this primary bathroom a fresh, airy feel
After 10 years in their Spokane, Washington, hillside home, this couple was ready to give their primary bathroom a much-needed update. The aging space had a leaky shower, a jetted tub with an imposing deck and a stark white double vanity with no hardware — not the relaxing, sophisticated retreat they envisioned.
The homeowners turned to interior designer Jasmine Galle to bring in nature-inspired warmth, elevate the style and improve function. A custom rift-cut white oak vanity with cane inserts adds storage, texture and visual warmth, while a freestanding pedestal tub gives the room a lighter, airier feel. Polished nickel details add a refined touch, and a more open shower and soothing neutral palette complete the serene transformation.

Cane inserts on the cabinet doors add another layer of texture. “This vanity really needed to blend a modern aesthetic with vintage touches,” Galle says. “We went with the slab front doors to keep it modern, but went with the polished nickel hardware because it has very ornate details like traditional hardware.“
A polished quartz countertop and backsplash with gray and taupe veining and a hint of gold shimmer bring subtle movement to the white surface. Two white oval undermount sinks pair with vintage-inspired widespread faucets in a polished nickel finish. Bronze-framed rectangular mirrors with concave curves and rounded edges add personality and soften the vanity wall, while antique nickel sconces with white glass shades complement the other metal finishes. “We love blending metals,” Galle says. “These mirrors have that aged bronze look that adds warmth to the space. The soft curves of the mirrors and the tub we selected add a feminine touch.”
Paneled wainscoting and window trim in warm greige (Accessible Beige by Sherwin-Williams) add more softness, while creamy off-white (Alabaster by Sherwin-Williams) on the walls and ceiling brightens the room and makes the most of the natural light.

Before: The jetted tub sat beneath a large window overlooking nature, but its blue-tile-and-wood deck dominated the room and crowded the adjacent shower. “We really wanted to try and open up that space and felt that the tub deck and the jetted tub needed to come out,” Galle says. “They’re also hard to clean.” To the right, a short framed-glass partition separated the tub from the shower.
After: A 69-inch white freestanding pedestal tub opens up the space beneath the window and brings a softer, more sculptural element to the room. The acrylic soaking tub has a rolled rim and brushed nickel drain. “I think because it has the soft curves and a dimension to it, it blends well with the timeless features we wanted to add to the space,” Galle says. “We didn’t want to have straight lines everywhere.”
A polished nickel floor-mount tub filler with a built-in diverter and hand shower complements a petite polished nickel chandelier above the tub. Large-format stone-look porcelain tile in a Versailles pattern covers the heated floor, with a honed finish and tonal variation that add texture. “We were able to use the circuit system from the old jetted tub to add a heated floor system,” Galle says.
Custom-stained alder beams bring rustic warmth and character to the now-brighter vaulted ceiling, while the original cedar’s texture shows through the paint. “That adds a nice overall rustic touch and texture to the space,” Galle says.

Before: A leak in the old shower prompted the remodel. Blue tile, a fabric curtain and a standard shower pan made the already-cramped space feel dated and closed in.
After: A new, more spacious low-curb shower feels open and bright thanks to a custom tempered-glass enclosure on two sides. “The biggest thing was taking out that wall separating the tub deck from the shower,” Galle says. “Now it’s a full height of glass that lets in lots of natural light. The shower is also much larger.”

Before: A standard white vanity with no hardware offered limited storage, while oversized mirror frames and large brown-and-beige tile flooring added to the dated look. “The bathroom felt hodgepodge-y,” Galle says. “The vanity had very old cabinetry, and there was only a small bank of drawers in the middle, so storage was really lacking.”
The aging jetted tub’s large tiled deck dominated the room and crowded the shower (see below). A large picture window above the tub, operable windows along the vanity wall and inside the shower, and the vaulted ceiling were all features the homeowners wanted to keep. But the cedar ceiling and tub apron made the space feel dark.
The bathroom also includes a separate water closet with a toilet (see floor plans below).
