White Sands Coastal DevelopmentThe 1,750-square foot Manhattan Beach bungalow is home to two humans and three dogs. Originally built in 1929, the bungalow had undergone various renovations that convoluted its original Moorish style. We gutted the home and completely updated both the interior and exterior. We opened the floor plan, rebuilt the ceiling with reclaimed hand-hewn oak beams and created hand-troweled plaster walls that mimicked the construction and look of the original walls. We also rebuilt the living room fireplace by hand, brick-by-brick, and replaced the generic roof tiles with antique handmade clay tiles.
We returned much of this 3-bed, 2-bath home to a more authentic aesthetic, while adding modern touches of luxury, like radiant-heated floors, bi-fold doors that open from the kitchen/dining area to a large deck, and a custom steam shower, with Moroccan-inspired tile and an antique mirror. The pool is paved in a deep teal-blue pool plaster and lined with custom hand-painted tiles, giving the look of an exotic oasis. Hand-painted tiles surrounding a hand-carved Italian marble basin fountain at the head of pool provides a stunning focal point against the backdrop of the mountains. Lushly planted blue-glazed ceramic pots flank the carved wood columns that support the Spanish tiled portal. Deep plush lounge chairs allow the space to be fully enjoyed by the residents any time of the day.

Urban Oasis Landscape DesignThe classic Spanish architecture of the house needed a memorable courtyard to welcome visitors and an extra dose of curb appeal. We designed an exquisite wrought iron front gate as the first point of entry with a Moorish star fountain just beyond that beckons you to enter. A creamy white sandstone creates an ethereal floor with a subtle but striking border detail around the fountain. Original Malibu-style tile was designed specifically for the fountain and custom colors complete this elegant and lovely water feature. The soft sound of brimming water is a soothing balm in a busy city day. A willowy Mediterranean Olive tree brings shade and serenity to the space as it sways gently among drought tolerant native Californian and climate-appropriate plants in a palette of soft mauves and blues with pops of orange.
