The weathered teak wood bench is an attractive focal point against a needed retaining wall that transitions the grade from the side of the house to the back. The blue flowering ajuga is spectacular in the spring and provides an evergreen cover all year. The evergreen pieris with it's white drooping flowers frames the bench and window nicely. Inspiration for a small eclectic shade backyard brick retaining wall landscape in New York.

Creeping juniper spills over rock walls. Trimming in early spring keeps the juniper in check. Never cut back to bare stem because bare wood will not produce new foliage.

The back of this house is comfortable and beautiful. The second story deck makes being outside easy. Accents of color added with the Weeping Japanese Maple and blue flowering ajuga make this a true garden setting. Photographer-Nancy Dransfield

These steps to the second story deck are made interesting and safe by adding the landing, The landing also provides the perfect location for the grill getting it off the main deck where the family dines. The plants hide the view under the deck. Notice the beautiful decorative post light that adds additional light to the stair case and surrounding area.
