This Backyard Waterfall project included installation of a pondless waterfall approximately 15' in length on a sloped bank at the area next to the existing pool. The backyard waterfall cascades down the existing embankment. There is still retaining wall work in progress as of this video and pictures being shot. The clean, modern lines and carefully planned spaces of this 50’ by 50’ garden form an enticing setting to simply unplug. Working within a very limited area, the design organizes a bio pool with sundeck, a spillover water feature and lounge area, and a gravel dining terrace with a built-in fireplace and shade tree canopy. Unlike traditional pools, our bio pool utilizes aquatic plants, beneficial bacteria, and microbes, rather than harsh chemicals, to filter the water. Impurities and excess nutrients are drawn out of the water naturally, creating a much healthier swimming environment. A native plant palette is incorporated throughout the garden with shade trees, ornamentals, native forbs, and perennials in an emergent spring landscape. We hope this exciting design will encourage green inspiration for visitors, whether they have a tight city lot or a larger suburban property.

Our focus was to revitalize the front of this Tudor style home located in Edina, Minnesota. We accomplished this by designing a new front entry featuring a two tiered concrete koi pond, concrete and flagstone entry walk, new turnaround driveway and other amenities. For the entry walk we used a combination curb and walk to provide a clear transition between the pedestrian walk and the vehicular drive. The primary entry walk uses mortared flagstone with a generous width, the secondary drop-off walk is narrow and made of broom finished concrete, the tertiary area of the walk surrounding the lower pool of the koi pond uses dry laid limestone. The hierarchy of the walk and its different areas are delineated through the use of different materials and dimensions. Another walk not shown in the picture uses broom finish concrete stepping pads. These pads connect the pedestrian garage door to the broom finished drop-off walk.

Koi pond was all a DIY. Made of concrete. Deck is redwood. Waterfall area was redone recently and is made of river rocks and boulders, mortared and lined w/pond liner. Bio falls waterfall and Pressurized bead filter that is sunk in the ground (hidden by the plants and the redwood wall!) Orchid boxes all made from scrap wood, sealed and stained. Koi are about 10 years old. The wood on the ground in the foreground is an african teak. It was sealed w/a spar varnish, but constant water from the sprinklers have taken it's toll. This beautiful simple to maintain entry will last decades with very little maintenance. The fully functional Bio Planters collect and filter rainwater.

The clients had a flat lawn front yard. They wanted to create a sense of wildness for their children to play in. Dad is a hobby entomologist and wanted to attract varied insects.
