Planting under established trees can be daunting for homeowners. This area called for a more sedate planting design that would brighten the understory near the entry drive. Variegated Hosta and native ferns lightened the space with their bright green foliage and provide just enough textural difference to be interesting, but not overwhelming.

The Upper Shade Garden The small enclosed Shade garden occupies the site of the former owners’ “kitchen” garden. It was here, protected from the deer by rock and wire fencing, that the two elderly ladies grew vegetables and flowers for the house.

Decorate around a pool or a garden with hostas & ferns & add little punches of colour with some annuals (these annuals used here are new guinea impatiens)

Deer resistant plantings. This selection of perennials and shrubs are bearing up well under the pressure from a large herd of deer that frequently hang out in this open area. The perennials are astilbe, carex, evergreen autumn fern, hellebore, and variegated solomon's seal. Shrubs include abelia, itea, laurel, mugho pine and oak leaf hydrangea. A shade garden planting consisting of two varieties of hosta, solomon's seal, heuchera, autumn fern, and mazus groundcover. This was located on a property that we used to maintain. The planting design was done by the homeowner.

A rustic walkway of irregular bluestone and a garden space heavily dependant upon texture: the robust foliage of Hosta and the feathery fronds of Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris), contrast well with the delicacy of the Variegated Ribbon Grass (Phalaris arundinacea var. picta) across the path. A lot of interest can be generated within a small plant palette.
