"Move an inch and the whole thing changes." This is what my photographer commented about the stair when he was shooting it. My client had bought the apartment below his and wanted to build a masculine and sleek home for himself. I imagined the stair as the focal point of the duplex - effortless with its connections hidden, as if it is simply touching the walls and floors around it. Ever changing as the flatness of the metal changes its appearance with every angle.

Previously, a window of frosted glass block punctuated the hallway. Unfortunately, it overlooked a perpetually dark courtyard and illuminated nothing. I changed this into an art installation of light. With its multiple settings, one can rotate through a selection of colors to wash the space in colored light, instantly changing the mood and feel of the space. The portal is seen here in lime green.

This is the master bathroom shower. We expanded the bathroom area by taking over the upstairs apartment kitchen when we combined apartments. This shower features a teak wood shower floor for a luxurious feel under foot. Also in teak is the shower nook for soaps and bottles. The rain head and hand shower make for a flexible and exhilarating bathing experience, complete with a bench for relaxing. Photos by Brad Dickson

The bedroom is enclosed by large scale sliding panels which double as art walls. The walls may be closed while entertaining guests and opened to completely integrate the bedroom and living room into one open space.

House parties are a regular event here and inspired many of our design decisions. The front door opens directly into the kitchen - the center of party action. I designed the cabinetry as a geometric composition that plays off the art and the feel of a gallery home.
